Here are some ideas of what you can make or use for your gerbils. Page 2.

To make a wooden cube chew toy. Use a 2x4, cut two squares 4x4 and glue together to make a wooden cube 4 inches x 4 inches. Then using a 1 1/2 inch hole saw, drill into the center of each side untill the middle is hollow. The Gerbils will gnaw on this cube.

You can also use a 4 inch log. First you drill a 1 1/2 inch hole through the center and on top. Then you remove the bark.

If you Want to use a cardboard tube that will last longer than the paper towel or bathroom tissue rolls. You can use the tube from the center of the dry cleaner bags or carpets. Holes can also, be drilled into the tube for mulitiple entries.

A small cage can be made using the following - a refridgerator plastic bin, Plexi glass, wood from the ends of fruit crates, and a wire rack.To make this cage, first drill several small holes on the top edge of the plastic bin, then place the 3 pieces of wood which have been nailed together on top of the bin. Turn it over and screw in several screws to hold it in place. On the front drill 4 holes in the plastic plexi glass and screw into place. Once completed you can use a wire rack or 1/2 inch hardware cloth for a cover.

Because this cage is small, it is recomended to connect several together or to an aquarium using S.A.M./Habitrail tubes.

A house can be made from a section of PVC square/rectangle fence post's. The post section will have the top and bottom open. First cut off one side leaving three sides. Drill a small hole in the PVC middle edge of each side then nail in two wooden sides. Finally, drill a 1 1/2 inch hole in the center of each wooden side to complete this PVC house.

You can grow your own greens, by putting some seeds in a cup, on top of a moistened cotton ball. After, about 5 days they will be ready for your Gerbils to eat.

If you have a gerbil ball without a cover. You can convert it into a exercise wheel by drilling a small hole near the opening and on the center of the other side. Then using a coat hanger, insert it through the holes and bend to make a stand and hang from the lid or side.

Cereal boxes, tissue boxes and other types of boxes can be placed into your gerbil tanks in different ways for chewing and exploring. This is an inexpensive way to provide environmental simulation.

You can make a wooden cheese house by glueing two pieces of wood (7" by 6 " and 8" by 6") together at 90 angles. Then place on top of another piece of wood.Trace and cut out the triangle for the top and glue. After the glue dries, cut off the ends [so they meet flush] at a 45 angle and place this on to a retangular piece of wood for the side(about 12" by 6 ") Finally cut off any pieces sticking out, and cut two different size holes into all sides of the triangle to make it look like swiss cheese, with a hole saw attachment on your drill. You can also paint it yellow with Food coloring or non-toxic childrens paint.

A small house can also be made by glueing together 3, 4 inch by 5 inch pieces of wood for the top, front and back. The 2 sides are then cut to fit. After you glue this house together you can drill 1 1/2 inch holes on all sides and paint using non-toxic paint.

Gerbil houses can be made out of Legos. They will eventually get gnawed on.
