The prompt asking for the addressee when using the menu item "send mail" or the "es" command may be followed by multiple addressees separated either by a space or a comma. Local and Internet addresses may be mixed. One disposal prompt will be displayed and it requires one "s" response to send to all individuals to whom the message is to be sent.

If a user has a mailing list to whom he/she routinely sends e-mail their names may be stored in the users filestore area and called out by the file name under which they are stored. The file name must follow the prompt for an id when using the menu option to "send mail" or the "es" command and be preceded by an asterisk - as an example the command to send to the list could be "es *listname" where listname is the name under which the file of names on the mailing list is stored in the user's personal filestore area.

Copies of e-mail messages may be sent to additional addresses and the secondary address will be shown on all copies of the message preceded by the legend "cc: ". They may also be sent as blind copies where the secondary address will not show on the original nor any copies.
The secondary addressees may be added when the original response to the menu "send mail" option is selected or the "es" command is given; during composition of the message by using the "~r" command; or, before sending by responding to the disposal prompt with a "r".
When adding secondary addresses the user should enter the normal address of the individual to whom he/she wishes to send the message and follow it with a backslash (\). This will cause the system to advance a line and await the entry of the secondary address. The secondary address should be proceeded by a "cc: " for a normal copy or a "bcc: " for a blind copy. The secondary addresses may be followed by a backslash (\) if additional secondary addresses are desired. Separate disposal prompts will not be displayed but individual messages indicating that the e-mail has been dispatched will be displayed. If neither the "cc: " nor the :bcc: " is entered the message will be sent to the secondary addressee just as though this addressee were the original addressee. In other words, multiple addressees may be added either when composing the message or at the disposal prompt.

E-mail addresses may be changed either by entering the "~r" during composing or by responding with "r" to the disposal prompt. In either of these cases the current addressee(s) will be displayed and may be edited to change the existing addressee as well as adding secondary addressees. Existing secondary addressees may be deleted merely by erasing them when they are displayed in this fashion. The use of the backslash (\) to include multiple addressees is described in the help file "m-copies".

Binary files, such as programs, graphics, audio, etc., which are stored on your system may be forwarded to other users of this system by attaching them to an e-mail message. Attachments to local and to Internet e-mail are handled slightly differently - special notes pertaining to Internet e-mail are included in these instructions.
First write your message as normal (to include instructions for using the file and similar information). When the message has been ended by entering the ### on a line by itself you should select the attach option in the disposal prompt. Screen instructions should then be followed to select the protocol to use to upload from your system and the name of the file to be uploaded. You may then select the send option. The contents of the attached file will not be visible to either the sender or the receiver but a notation indicating the size of the attached file will be displayed to the sender and will show in the header of the message when it is received. In the case of Internet e-mail the user will process the file in this same manner but the system will uuencode the file and include it in the body of the message where it will be visible should the user list the message - the notation in the header indicating that a file is attached will NOT be present on Internet e-mail. Upon receipt of a message indicating that a binary file is attached the addressee should enter the CIX command "message.enclosure.get" (which may be abbreviated "m.e.g") at the prompt after displaying the message. Screen instructions should then be followed to select the protocol to use to download to your system and name you wish to use on your system (refer to the documentation for your terminal program as to the path and file information that must be entered). In the case of Internet e-mail the recipient of the message must uudecode the file - he/she will have no indication that the file is other than a normally uuencoded file.
Uuencoded messages sent to this system over the Internet will be converted to attached binary files and can be downloaded using the "m.e.g" command as outlined above.
In the case of local messages no encoding nor decoding of the file is involved in this type of transfer.

A number of users have inquired about how to download e-mail to their own system since this is not included as a menu choice. While there are several methods that are available following is the recommended method.
1> Access the message to be downloaded (normally by reading it).
2> At the prompt "Enter selection ==>" the user should enter "m.t.d" (this is an abbreviation for the CIX command "message.transfer.download").
3> From the menu of protocols which will be displayed select one that matches what is available on the user's terminal software. If user is dialed in to this system the recommeded protocol is zmodem; if telnetted in to this system Kermit seems to work best - these are only recommendations and others may work best for some users. In any event the protocol selected MUST be available on the user's software.
4> Depress the enter (return) key and then activate the user's protocol. Refer to user's terminal program.

Compuserve user ids are in the format xxxxx,yyyy. Replace the comma with a period and append "@compuserve.com" and use the normal send e-mail instruction.
For example user 12345,1234 becomes [email protected].

Bitnet user ids are usually in the format "person@place". Append ".bitnet" and use the normal send e-mail instruction.
For example user jsmith@hawaii becomes [email protected].

Genie user ids are usually simple names. Append "@genie.geis.com" and use the normal send e-mail instruction.
For example user jsmith becomes [email protected].
If this does not work try:
USERID%[email protected] or USERID%[email protected]
These alternate addresses are not "official" but they have been found to work by some users.

Fidonet uses a three part address - zone, net and individual node numbers. For example a user's address may be "1:125/555" - you will also need the user name.
For example a Fidonet user who is known as Joe.Knueven and is on the above Fidonet node will become [email protected] - the name and the numerals will be different for each user but the f, n, z and .fidonet.org are required.

AOL users have screen_names which serve as ids. To convert to Internet addresses change all letter so lower case, remove all spaces and append @aol.com.
For example, the Internet address of John Brown who has an account on AOL might become [email protected].

In order to address mail to Prodigy users use their Prodigy id and append @prodigy.com.
For example if a user has a Prodigy id of RHRP15A you wouid use [email protected] to send e-mail to him/her over the Internet.

While the message.forward command is available to manually forward individual messages to another address either on this system or on any system which may be accessed via the Internet, users often like to have all mail received here automatically forwarded to their own mailbox on another system. The following procedure may be used to automatically forward mail to another system if the system you are using allows this function:
1 - From the main menu access the Post Office either from the menu choice or by using the command "j /mail".
2 - Select the item in the Post Office menu for entering the forwarding address. This address may be any legitimate Internet e-mail address.
Note that there is also an item on the Post Office menu which will display the address to which mail will be forwarded - just in case a user forgets where he is having his/her mail forwarded to.
Note, also, that if a user addresses mail to his/her local mailbox the forwarding function does not work - it is presumed that a user addressing mail in this manner has a use for it in his/her current address - such as forwarding to his/her filestore.

If you exchange much e-mail it is almost inevitable that you will receive mai
with a file attached. Files come in two general classes - text (which includ
only upper and lower case letters, numbers and some frequently used
punctuation marks) and binary (which include all characters . Files such as
programs, graphics, and audio are common binary files.
Text files are normally just copied into the body of the e-mail message. They
can be retrieved by downloading the message and using your normal word
processor or text editor to edit out the extraneous material.
Binary files, however, may be either encoded and enclosed within the body of
the message or they may be attached and transmitted along with the message but
not actually a part of it. While some efforts have been made to standardize
the method of attaching files to e-mail this ideal situation has not yet been
reached so when you receive a binary file it will be necessary to identify the
type of enclosure or attachment and then use the method unique to that type to
be used to retrieve it. We will try here to describe some of the various
types of attachments you may receive and how to retreive them.
RETREIVING FILES SENT ATTACHED TO MESSAGES SENT LOCALLY
If the message has been sent to you by another user of this system it will
most likely have been "attached" to the message using the attach option of the
disposal prompt . In this case the header of the message will look something
like this:

Note that the header information includes a line not normally found in the
headers of the e-mail that you receive - "Encl: 1709 byte file "enclose.cix".
In this case the sender has included the instructions for retreiving the file
but the presence of the header line "Encl: ..." should alert the recipient of
the type of file he/she is to retreive with the message.enclosure.get command
(m.e.g). Note that nowhere is the contents of the file visible. When the
m.e.g command is executed you will be asked to select the protocol you want to
use (just like when downloading any message or file from the system) and tost
the proper download routine in your terminal program. All files will show the
name "enclose.cix" but you may backspace over this name and enter a name of
your own choice before you start the downloading.
In some cases another user of this system may decide to send you a uuencoded
file embedded in the body of his message. Considering the ease of attaching
binary files to e-mail sent within the system it is unlikely thatth will
happen. However, if you receive a message that looks something like the
following you will know it has been uuencoded and it will be necessary for you
to decode it either on thes system or to download it and decode it offline:
