COOKIE ANYONE?

This explanation of cookies and their use on this Web page only applies when a graphic browser such as Netscape or MS Internet Explorer is used to view the page - users of text-only browsers such as Lynx may ignore this explanation.

Cookies are one of the most misunderstood items on the World Wide Web. Basically, a cookie is a bit of information that a WWW page stores on your computer and later retrieves. Now why would anyone want to do that? And, aren't cookies a dangerous intrusion into your system? While I suppose that it is possible that they can be there for nefarious purposes I have yet to hear of such uses being made of cookies.

In my case (assuming that you have accepted the cookie) I have a cookie on your system that tells me when was the last time you visited this site. The next time you visit the site that date is compared with the last date on which this page was modified. If the modification date is later than the date of your last visit then a little note is displayed on your screen telling you that changes have been made to what was here when you last visited the site. Now isn't that helpful information for you? And, is it detrimental to your operation? The only part of your system that this Web page can access is that information which has been placed in the cookie relating to this site.

For the moment you don't have to be concerned about cookies on this site as I have temporarily discontinued it - it was giving false readings and just served to confuse people, I am afraid.

As a rule I accept cookies from the sites that I visit because I feel that, as is the case in the cookie connected with this site, the information is used in a way that is beneficial to me. I hope that you make similar use of the cookie stored here by your access of this site.
