Notes:

 

William Brotherton (abt 1645)  From Huntington Town Records (Huntington, LI, NY): William owned land in 1669, and it is described.  Also that in 1689, William, John, and Mary were his children, and a David was mentioned who may have come later.

 

William Brotherton (17 May, 1678)  He was the son of William, but lack of records after father William died in 1699 makes it sound like he didn't live to maturity.

 

Mary Brotherton (17 Nov, 1681)  She was the daughter of William.

 

John Brotherton (1 May, 1686)  Son of William.  There are several entries through 1740 where he bought and sold land.  The name was used many times in the line, so it's possible the line goes entirely through him.  Guessing that his children were William, Abel, Eli, Benaiah, Isaac, and Zerviah.

 

David Brotherton (abt 1690)  According to records, he bought land in 1714.  Assume he was son of William.

 

William Brotherton (abt 1706)  He is a speculated link, beginning a line of Williams.  Named after dead uncle.  Speculated children: William (abt 1730), and Mary (abt 1732).

 

Abel Brotherton (abt 1708)  He is a speculated link, the son of John, beginning a line of Abels.  He didn't have his children baptized at First Church, Huntington.

 

Eli Brotherton (abt 1710) Eli was named in Benaiah's will as a brother.  Speculated as his children are:  Jerutha (Jul 1724), Eli (Jun 1729), Zilpah (Jun 1731), and Othniel (Jun 1733).  It appears he had his children baptized at First Church, Huntington.

 

Benaiah (abt 1712)  His will in 1763 lists unnamed wife and brother Elie (Eli).

 

Isaac Brotherton (abt 1715) His marriage was recorded in Suffolk Co, NY, at First Church of Huntington Oct 1741.  He was listed on tax rolls at Dutchess Co, NY, Nine Partners Patent, years 1753-1756.  In 1755 he bought 36 acres next to Benjamin and Micaiah Brotherton.  It appears he had his children baptized at First Church, Huntington.

 

Zerviah Brotherton (abt 1717) Marriage recorded at First Church, Huntington, 1737.

 

 

William Brotherton (abt 1730) He and wife Ann Dundass had infant son Daniel baptized in NYC in 1761 at Trinity Church.  Assume that William (abt 1762) was also his son.

 

William Brotherton (abt 1762)  Assume he is son of William and Ann Dundass.  Listed in census report of 1800 in Schoharie Co, 1810 and 1820 in Genesee Co.  In 1800 name was listed as Wilber, but many of the names were misspelled by that enumerater.  Genesee Co was later split so Middlebury became part of Wyoming Co.  He owned land in Genesee Co, recorded in Western NY Land Records.  Wyoming Co historian lists children as William (1789), Noah, David, and Delanie.

 

William Brotherton (1789)  Listed in census report of 1820 in Middlebury, Genesee Co, NY.  Wyoming Co historian lists children: Jeremiah, Angeline, Huldah, Delania, Jerusha, Abel (abt 1827), David, and Ichabod.

 

 

Abel Brotherton (abt 1727)  His marriage to Sarah Rhyon was recorded at First Church, Huntington on Dec 1749.  Listed on tax rolls of Dutchess Co, Nine Partners Patent, years 1753-1769.

 

John Brotherton (1752) Possibly born while parents visited Peter, as his obituary lists PA as birth place, though he seems to be part of this family.  Married first in Dutchess Co in 1776 to Ruth Knotten, whose father was Joseph Knotten and he moved his family to Albany Co.  Served in the Revolutionary war, listed in pension files in 1820.  1790 census Ballstown, Albany Co, NY.  Married Desire Butler in Onondaga Co in abt 1796.  1800 census Onondaga Co, NY.  Moved to Washington Co, IN in 1818.  1820 census Washington Co, IN.

 

Abel Brotherton (1778)  Attended school in Onondaga Co at age 22.  Veteran of the War of 1812.   Married Clarissa Averill in about 1813 in Onondaga Co.  Moved with Clarissa, Philemon, and Jasper to Dearborn Co, IN in 1818, listed there in 1820 census, with 3 boys under 10 yrs.  Left IN in 1825 (father John died in 1823), later settling in Piqua, in Miami Co, OH.  Clarissa's obituary in Miami Helmet lists the places they lived.

 

Philemon Brotherton (1815)  Son of Abel (1778). Obituary found in Miami Helmet.  Born in Onondaga Co. He was discussed in the Early History of Miami Co.

 

Jasper Brotherton (1816)  Obituary found in Miami Helmet.

 

Charles Cronkite Brotherton (1819)  Born in IN in 1819, and in 1820 Abel is the only Brotherton in IN.  In 1820, Abel's census seems to include Charles.  We have concluded that he was son of Abel, although specific mention was not found.  A family photo in later years includes Jasper.  He married Sarah Ann Smith in 1840, whose father was a doctor and Sarah was a midwife.  Census report of 1850 lists him as head of household in Delaware Co, OH.  He migrated first to Hancock Co, IL, then to Clark Co, MO, where he is listed on the 1880 census.  His children were:  Adline, Silas, Lewis Smith, John Abel, Charles, Joshua, and Stile.

 

Lewis Smith Brotherton (b1848)  Son of Charles Cronkite Brotherton.  Married Florence Lionberger in Hancock Co, IL in 1869.  Moved his family to Kansas in 1873, but finding a serious drought, moved back to Clark Co, MO in 1875.  His father and family joined him there.

 

John Abel (Able,Abraham) (b1851)  Son of Charles Cronkite Brotherton.   He was listed as family member of Charles C Brotherton family in Delaware Co, OH, and his name was John Able.  He was listed in the census of 1880 in Clark Co, MO as head of household, and his name was given as John Able and his wife Elizabeth (Betty).   His descendants now list him as John Abraham.  He may have changed his name in his later years.

 

 

Truman Brotherton (1823) 

 

Unknown children:  Clarissa's obituary said they had 13 children.

 

 

Truman Brotherton  (abt 1785?)  Speculate he was John's son.  1830 Census Clinton Co, IN.   1840 Census Knox Co, IN.

 

Zacheus Brotherton (1798) Son of John (1752) by second wife Desire Butler.  Described in John's obit as handicapped with only one leg.

 

Grandison Brotherton (1803) Children: Noah, Alfred, Caroline, Milton Reuben, Emily, Miles, and Martin V.

Abel Brotherton (b~1754)  Son of Abel (b~1727). 1820 Census Albany, NY. 

 

Abel Brotherton  (b~1775)  1820, 1830, and 1840 Census Albany, NY.  Had a daughter Elizabeth (b1799) who was christened in 1799 in Bethlehem Reformed Church (Albany Co).

 

 

Peter Brotherton (b~1729)  Speculated to be son of Abel (b~1708).  Baptized daughter in Philadelphia in 1748 at Christ Church.  Speculate that Abel (b~1727) was visiting him soon after marriage when John (b1752) was born.  No further evidence of him was found.

 

 

Daniel Brotherton (b~1730)  Record was found of Daniel in NY with sons Eli, Elisha, John, Micajah, and Zophar in ~1760.  Speculate that he is son of Abel (b~1708).  Use of the family names seems to confirm that he is in the family.

 

John Brotherton (b~1750)  Son of Daniel (~1730).  Enlisted in Albany Militia in 1775 along with brothers Micajah and Zophar.  I didn't find him listed in Schoharie Co in 1800, but I think he was there.  Speculate that he moved to Genesee Co along with brother Micajah, and they were there in the 1810 and 1820 census in Middlebury.  Western NY Land Records say John bought land in 1809 and sold it in 1816.  Suspect his sons were Abel (b1797) and possibly a John whose wife was Rachel.  Rachel was born in 1786, and her stone said she was wife of John, but it could have been a late marriage for old John, too.  A Brotherton descendant reports that according to heresay,  a John(b~1790) came to Genesee Co from England via MA, and Rachel was his wife, but no record of Brothertons was found in MA..  

 

Abel Brotherton (b1797)  Said to have been born in Schoharie Co.  I think he was Son of John (b~1750).  Listed in 1820 census in Genesee Co in Middlebury, with wife and son under 10 yrs.   I think he was John's son because William and Micajah were the only other Brothertons in Genesee Co:  William's genealogy doesn't include Abel b1797. Micajah in census reports of 1800 (Schoharie Co) and 1810 (Genesee Co) had no sons of Abel's age.  This Abel moved to Vigo Co, IN.  Children were:  James S, Richard, Caroline, William, Elizabeth A, Hiram, John, and Ransom B.

 

Micajah Brotherton (b~1750) Son of Daniel (~1730).  His name appears with several different spellings, and seems to be a corruption of Micaiah, a Biblical name.  Served in Albany Militia, 1775.  1800 census, Schoharie Co, 1810 and 1820 census in Genesee Co.

 

Zophar Brotherton (b~1750) Served in Albany Militia, 1775.   1800 census, Schoharie Co, NY.

 

 

Micaiah (Micajah) Brotherton (b~1730)  Speculated to be son of Abel (b~1708).  A record was found that in 1749 he owned property in Huntington, Suffolk Co, LI, NY.  In 1755 he owned property in Washington Town, Dutchess Co, Nine Partners Patent.

 

Benjamin Brotherton (b~1734)  Owned property in Washington Town, Dutchess Co, Nine Partners Patent in 1755.  In Mar 1748, he joined First Church in Huntington.

 

 

Jerutha Brotherton (b1724)  Baptized First Church, Huntington.  Speculated to be daughter of Eli (b~1710)

 

Eli Brotherton (b1729)  Baptized June 1729, First Church, Huntington.  Listed in tax Rolls of Washington Town, Dutchess Co for years 1768-1772.  He was the last to go to Dutchess Co, when the other Brothertons were already there, so children born 1751-1763 and baptized in Huntington are thought to be his.  He apparently stayed with Benaiah until Benaiah's death in 1763.  His will was probated in 1791, and mentioned cousin Micajah, al Abel, Isaac, and Eli.

 

Jemima Brotherton (b1751)  Daughter of Eli (1729).  Baptized at First Church, Huntington.

 

Elisha Brotherton (b1754).  Son of Eli(1729).  Baptized First Church, Huntington Oct 1754.  Went back or stayed in Suffolk Co.  1790 and 1810 census, Suffolk Co, NY.  Married Deborah Nichols at First Church, Huntington in 1778.  Census of 1790 and 1810 listed him in Suffolk Co, NY. 

 

Gideon Brotherton   Son of Elisha.  1820 and 1830 census, Suffolk Co.

  

 

Nathaniel Brotherton (b1756)  Son of Eli(1729). Baptized First Church, Huntington Aug 1756.

 

Samuel Brotherton (b1758) Son of Eli (1729).  Baptized First Church, Huntington Aug, 1758. (Thought by some researchers to have been born 1755, though they found no birth record.)  Thought by this researcher to be the Samuel who with his brother Daniel, married the Batterson sisters in 1782 in Westport, CT.   Westport is only 10 miles from Huntington, accross LI Sound.  Children: Sarah, David, Nathaniel, Jerusha, Samuel, and Zalmon.

 

Daniel Brotherton (b1761) Son of Eli.  Baptized First Church, Huntington Oct, 1761.  In 1782, he and his brother Samuel married the Batterson sisters in Westport, CT.  Children:  Hannah, Eli, Joel, Nathan, Lydia, Elkanah, Susanna, Abel, Clarina, Jerusha, Sally Ann, Abigail, and Israel.

 

Hannah Brotherton (b1763)  Baptized at First Church, Huntington Oct, 1763.

 

 

Zilpah Brotherton (b1731) Daughter of Eli(~1710).  Baptized at First Church, Huntington June, 1731.

 

Othniel Brotherton (b1733) Son of Eli(~1710).  Baptized at First Church, Huntington June, 1733.  His name seemed to have been corrupted to Othaniel.  He was listed in the tax rolls of  Dutchess Co 1755-1772.  In 1757, he registered an ear mark (pig or cow):  "a crop on the L ear and a slit in said crop, and 2 and a halfpenny the underside of the same ear."  He owned land in Washington Town, Nine Partners Patent, Dutchess Co.

 

Othniel (Othaniel) Brotherton (b~1760) Suspected son of Othniel(1733).  He would have been born in Dutchess Co.  In census reports for 1800 in Schoharie Co, an Othaniel is listed of about this age near Daniel, too old to be Daniel's son and too young to be his father.  Daniel and Othaniels' names appear together like they were next door. 

 

Daniel Brotherton (b1765) Suspect he was son of Othaniel (1733). 1790 census, Saratoga, Albany Co.  He and Othaniel were found together in Schoharie Co census report in 1800.  1810 census in Otsego Co.  1820 census in Onondaga Co.  He named a son Othaniel, a good clue in the early Brothertons.  See Daniel Brotherton LINE I.  His children were:  Othaniel, Daniel, Joshua, Reuben, Nathan, Jeremiah, Matilda, and Moses.

 

Joshua Brotherton (b~1760)  Suspected son of Othaniel (1733).  A Joshua Brotherton appears in the census for 1800 in Schoharie Co, too early to be Daniel's son. 

 

 

Zophar Brotherton (b1743)  Baptized Nov 1743 at First Church, Huntington.  Suspect he is son of Isaac(b~1715),  born 2 yrs after Isaac's wedding in Oct, 1741.  He was listed on the tax rolls of Dutchess Co for years 1765-1778.  He may have had a son Zophar, who appeared on the 1790 census in Dutchess Co with small children, or Zophar at 47 might have had a second marriage, a common event when wives were frequently lost in childbirth.

 

Isaac Brotherton (b~1768)  Suspected son of Zophar.  He owned land in Dutchess Co in 1793.  He appeared in 1810 and 1820 census in Albany Co.

 

Ruth Brotherton (b1746)  Suspect she was daughter of Isaac(~1715).  Baptized at First Church at Huntington Aug, 1746.

 

Naomi Brotherton (b1750)  Suspect she was daughter of Isaac(~1715).  Baptized at First Church at Huntington Oct, 1750.

 

 

Eli Brotherton (b~1753)  Suspected son of Isaac (~1715).  Land records of Dutchess Co list him as the second Eli to own land there in 1786, and his wife was listed as Topper.  He may have been the Eli on the 1790 census in Washington Town, Dutchess Co, as the other Eli (1729) would have been 60 at the time and died sometime during 1790.  He would have been born after Isaac moved to Dutchess Co, as Isaac had his other children baptized at Huntington.
