1.    William Palmer born abt 1570,  Great Ormsby England, married 1616, Frances (?).  William died c. 1637.  Came on the Fortune, Nov, 1621.  The name "Palmer" means "a pilgrim so-called from the palm branch which he constantly carried as a pledge of his having been to the Holy Land." Dates from Banks. Frances: Name per Banks

Second Generation

 

2.    Martha Palmer (1.William1) born 1618, married c.1638, John Sherman, born 1604, baptized: Sept 3, 1612, Gt. Horkesley, Essex Co, England, (son of Edmund Sherman and Joan Makin) occupation Surveyor, town clerk, died Jan 25, 1690/1, Watertown, MA.  Martha died Feb 7, 1700/1, Watertown, MA.  John: Ensign in 1654, Captain in 1680/1. Came to New England in 1634 .  The English pedigree of this family has been traced to Thomas Shearmen who was born about 1443 in Yaxley, Suffolk Co., England.  They were of German origin many centuries ago. This American line includes Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence and Gen. William T. Sherman, Civil War.

                      Children:

          4.     i    John Sherman born Oct 1, 1638, died Dec 19, 1675, S. Kingston, RI.  Was engaged in the war against King Philip and was killed in the Great Swamp fight in South Kingston.

       +5.     ii    Martha Sherman born Feb 21, 1640/1.

          6.     iii   Mary Sherman born Mar 26, 1644, died Nov 6, 1677.

          7.     iv   Sarah Sherman born Jan 17, 1648, died 1667.

          8.     v    Elizabeth Sherman born Mar 15, 1649.

          9.     vi   Joseph Sherman born May 14, 1650, Watertown, MA, died Jun 30, 1731, Watertown, MA.

          10.    vii  Grace Sherman born Dec 20, 1653.

 

Third Generation

 

5.    Martha Sherman (2.Martha2, 1.William1) born Feb 21, 1640/1, married Sep 26, 1661, in Watertown, MA, Francis Bowman, born 1630, (son of Nathaniel Bowman and Anne (Anna) (?)) died Dec 16, 1687, Watertown, MA.  Martha died Feb 9, 1700.  Sherman says she was born Feb 21, 1641.  She is also called Martha Palmer and was a granddaughter of Governor Winthrop

                      Children:

          11.    i    Nathaniel Bowman born Feb 9, 1668/9, Watertown, MA, married Dec 16, 1692, Anne Barnard, born Aug 27, 1670, Watertown, MA, (daughter of John Barnard and Sarah Fleming) died Sep 16, 1757.  Nathaniel died June 30, 1748.

          12.    ii    Francis Bowman born 1662, Lexington, MA, married Lydia Stone, born 1665, (daughter of Samuel Stone and Sarah Stearns) died 1719, Lexington. MA.  Francis died 1744, Lexington, MA.
