Herman Gehling, Jr.

Herman Jr. was born at the family home in Carroll County, Iowa. He was baptized at Sts Peter and Paul Church in nearby Carroll, where he also went to school. Herman Jr. was said to possess many of the qualities of his namesake; he had a good business sense and was well liked in the community. On 31 January 1923 he married Genevive Gross. Together they had twelve children:

1- George Gehling (married Lillian Klocke; together they had ten children: Donald, Mary, Patricia, Jane, Georgia, Allan, Richard, Steven, Barbara, Cathy)

2- Vernon Gehling (married Delores Schwabe; together they had seven children: Nancy, Dale, Lou Ann, Denny, Susan, Timmy, Terry)

3- Rita Gehling (married Louis Anstoeter; together they had two children; Karen and Michael)

4- Louise Gehling (married Walter Schmitz; together they had five children: Margene, Thomas, Sharon, Debra, Gail)

5- Edward Gehling (married Lorraine Berning; togther they had four children: Joseph, Janice, Jean, Matthew)

6- Rose Gehling (married Wilfred Ocken; together they had three children: Diane, Marilyn, Joleen)

7- Norma Gehling (married Edward Rasmussen; together they had two children: Mary and Carla)

8- James Gehling (remained single)

9- Robert Gehling (married Joan Huggenbury; together they had seven children: Joyce, Linda, Kenneth, Roger, Randy, Russel, Keith)

10- Joan Gehling (became a Catholic nun - Sister Joan Gehling)

11- Carl Gehling (married Linda Muggenbury; together they had three children: Lori, Lisa, Kimberly)

12- Gerald Gehling (married Nancy Huebsch; together they had three children: Annette, Stephanie, Jeffry. Gerald later married Kathy Koepke)
