Agnes Gehling was born on the family farm in Carroll County, Iowa. She was baptized at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in nearby Carroll. On 13 February 1917 she married Anton Henry (Tony) Wernimont. He had been a country school teacher before taking up farming. Agnes was known as a good cook and excellent gardener. Her strawberry patch was said to be huge. Together she and Tony had four children:
1- Marcellus Wernimont (married Marian Boyd; together they had fifteen children: Michael, Mendal, Marilyn, Mark, Margaret, Mary, Mainesi, Martin, Manita, Maynard, Myron, Milo, Maxine, Marsha, Marlys Jean)
2- Agnes Wernimont (became Sister Agnes Wernimont, a Catholic nun)
3- Cleo Wernimont (married Patricia Thompson; together they had six children: Laura, George, Norman, Linda, Brian, Steven)
4- Anna Wernimont (married Raymond Mantz; together they had one child: Michael)
