Dear Tina, May 6, 2002
Since you were the only one to send us an Easter card, I thought I’d return the favor. Orthodox Pascha (pronounced Pos-ka) was only yesterday and since you were chagrinned that Easter was so early, I thought you’d appreciate that. Next year they are only a week apart, Western Easter on April 20 and Eastern Pascha on April 27. However, Pascha is never in March (or at least it won’t be during the rest of my earthly life).
Luke and I did the midnight service this year. (I did it solo last year.) It runs from about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Luke made it through okay, though he did have to sit down a few times. He also yawned a lot, not only not covering his mouth, but also loudly sucking in air as he did. You should have seen him in a tie, though. Man, he’s as huge as a man. Ashley was right.
He’s still tearing up clothing some, and Kate still has some behaviors we’re patiently working on ending (let me be deliberately vague there, for your benefit). Even so, they are both a lot mellower than they used to be. Good thing, too, because Cathy and I are both getting too old for enduring. We both switched to bifocals following our most recent eye checks. I had a premonition when I visited the optometrist at 39. He said, “I know you don’t want to hear this at your age, but bifocals are in your future.” That said, Cathy and I both like the change. Since we read a lot and drive often, they have been extremely useful.
This summer Cathy will be adding the SpEd endorsement, which involves going to school all of June and July. Luke and Kate will attend summer school with her (as they did with me in Summer 2000; same program). Having schooled the past two summers, I’m looking forward to some leisurely puttering around the house. In truth, it won’t be completely leisurely. I’m beginning the promotion (?) from SpEd Teacher to SpEd Supervisor, so I’ll be a year-round employee instead of the 10-months that teachers get paid for.
The Rockies (Luke’s team that I coach) at 2-1 have already won as many games as we did all of last season. They aren’t fielding any better, but they are hitting well. Even Luke is batting above .500. If you’d like to see a game, or if you and my favorite niece would like to go to Dollywood sometime, give us a call (or write). We can even get you in the Mimosa Estates pool this summer. Knowing Cathy would need some homework time at night, I signed us up so I could take the kids around for a couple hours each evening. We’ve never joined in the almost 10 years we’ve lived here (not counting Albuquerque time).
Praying for you and your family,
P.S. Read any depressing books lately?
