A Good Lonely

I sent this one to a Tennessee-based magazine looking for local stories of less than 1,300 words. The didn't accept it, they said, because my character development was weak. Now, being a damned Yankee, if they had said my use of local idioms was off the mark, I might have bought that. As it was, I just thought, "How well developed can a character be in 1,300 words?"

My working title was "Something to Look Forward To." But the revised title came from something a coworker's parents said to her about retirement living.
