William Owens and the Rise of the Methodist Church in Virginia
By Dianna Alaniz and William P. Owen III
Sept. 1998

William and Mary Owens were Welsh emigrants who settled near what is now Portsmouth, Virginia. Having been brought up under its teachings, they were staunch members of the Anglican Church. How they came to be identified with the rise of Methodism in Virginia and their protest against slavery is a worthwhile story.

The history of America was and will always be a story of political freedom and spiritual awakening. During the colonial period, the state-supported Anglican Church dominated the religious lives of Virginians. But even before the American Revolution, the church was challenged and its hold weakened by the efforts of John Wesley in England. Through his writing and preaching began a spiritual upheaval, which would split the church although he never intended that to happen. By the late 1700's, the seed had been planted and the Methodist Episcopal Church in America multiplied its numbers as the spiritually hungry were converted.

The instrument for spreading the message of salvation to the sparsely populated countryside was the Itinerant Minister or Circuit Riding Preacher. These preachers and their families suffered enormous hardship, deprivation and occasionally violence in order to spread the message of salvation. The Methodist teachings would eventually lead to the overturn of slavery although this controversy would split the domination and hence the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church would be formed.

The story begins in 1772 when Rev. Robert Williams made a missionary tour through Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. On his arrival at Norfolk, Virginia, Rev. Williams mounted the steps at the courthouse and began singing hymns. A crowd soon gathered and he began preaching. That's when his audience became boisterous and threatening. Observing the mob spirit forming, William Owens decided to take action. As one of the local justices of the county, he pushed his way through the crowd, and took a stand beside the preacher and commanded the peace. Having done his duty as the magistrate, he was rewarded with dubious privilege of hearing a genuine gospel sermon.

The piety and earnestness of this preacher impressed Mr. Owens so much that he decided to invite him home for the night. The friendless preacher gratefully accepted the invitation. Problems arose however when Mrs. Owens learned that the guest for the night was a Methodist preacher. She declared vociferously that no such creature should stay at her house. "But", said William, "I have invited him, and I cannot turn him away now." Replied Mary warmly, "Very well, then, if you are determined to have our home disgraced by a babbling Methodist preacher in it, I shall go and stay over night with one of the neighbors".

Fortunately, this good wife was finally persuaded to yield a few points and permitted the guest to remain. When the hour of retirement and evening worship came, the missionary did not neglect his duty. Rev. Williams conducted devotions, devoutly calling on God on behalf of the parents, their children and servants. Hearts were changed during the progress of this devotional hour and Mr. Owen awoke to the consciousness that he was in need of further examination of his spiritual life.

The next morning, as this itinerant preacher was about to leave, Mr. Owens said to him: "Can you not leave an appointment to preach at my house on your return from you journey into the Carolinas?" Said Rev. Williams, "You may expect me four weeks from today". On his return, Rev. Williams pleased to find that not only Mr. and Mrs. Owens were in attendance, but five of their neighbors also. And the seven of them, at this meeting, became converts, witnessing and rejoicing.

Organized as a Class by Rev. Williams, this group constituted the first Methodist society in the State of Virginia. Some records seem to verify this. Lednum's History, The Rise of Methodism in America, Chapter 12, page 78, says: "In the beginning of 1772, Robert Williams went to Norfolk, Virginia. He was the first Methodist preacher in the Old Dominion." The home of Mr. Owen, as long as he remained in the vicinity of Portsmouth, was the meeting place of the new society. Other records seem to confirm The First Methodist Conference, American, was held at Philadelphia, in June 1773, reporting ten preachers in attendance, Thomas Ranking, George Shadford, John King, William Waters, Francis Asbury, Robert Yearbry, Robert Williams, Robert Strawbridge, Abraham Whitworth and Richard Wright. Their report of lay memberships: New York, 180; New Jersey, 200; Philadelphia, 180; Maryland, 500; Virginia, 100 -in all 1160. A large part of these accredited to Virginia, were from Brunswick County; the rest divided among the cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Norfolk and Portsmouth. In 1774, The Virginia Conference Report, disclosed - lay members, Fairfax, 350; Norfolk, 125; Brunswick, 1611. Evidently Brunswick County was one of the strongholds of Methodism.

After that meeting at their home, as Robert Williams was returning from the Carolinas, the very next day after his conversion, Mr. Owen went over to Norfolk and manumitted all his slaves, eighty-three in number. Not long afterwards, he went into Brunswick county, where land was comparatively cheap, to settle his freed-men there. And some years later, near the close of the Revolutionary War, learning his ex-slaves were being mistreated by their neighboring slaveholders, he moved with his family to Brunswick county, in order to afford some protection, and support of the interests of these freedmen.

For many years Brunswick County was the chief rallying-point of Virginia Methodists; Bishop Asbury held several Annual Conferences, on Brunswick Circuit. His journal recites: "Wednesday, Dec 2 (1796) I preached at my old friend, W. Owen's home, - whom I first knew at Portsmouth. We had a small house and a good meeting."

Lovewell Owens, daughter to William and Mary Owens, when between ten and eleven years of age, was converted at this meeting, and received into the church by Bishop Asbury. In later years, she revered the name of Bishop Asbury, who, in very truth, was her spiritual godfather.

There is a story behind the name Lovewell. When the Owen family lived in near Norfolk, a company of foragers from the British Army visited William Owens's plantation, during his absence, and drove away every foot of live stock on the place. Soon after the 'gang' had gone with their booty, a British officer in regimentals, booted and spurred, rode to the front gate and hallooed. Mary Owen on stepping to the door to answer the call, was commanded to prepare dinner for him at once. He then dismounted, and deliberately strode into her house. Dinner being, as it was, already ready, she invited him to the table, over which service she presided with such grace and dignity as to win his respect. Softening his demeanor, he became in her presence, a courteous gentleman. She made no mention of the 'press gang' until he opened the way by saying: "The soldiers raided your plantation this morning, I believe, did they not?" "Yes, sire", she calmly responded, "they drove away all our live stock; they left us nothing." He made no further allusion to the subject during the rest of the dinner, but on rising to take his leave, he said: "I am Captain Lovewell, of the British army and have charge of the men that raided your plantation this morning." About five o'clock in the evening, William being yet absent, the 'press gang' returned bringing back everything they had taken away with them that morning.

On returning home at night-fall, William Owens listened with eager interest as Mary recounted the incidents of the day, and she added: "In memory of the kindness of Captain Lovewell, I am resolved, if the Lord in his good providence, shall ever favor us with an addition to the number of our children, either boy or girl, the name of that child, with your consent, shall be Lovewell."

Eventually another child was born -a girl (fortunately), and she was named Lovewell. She married Bowlin Smith, and Rev. John L. Smith was her son. He says of this name: "So Lovewell became for me, the most precious of names among women." Lovewell Owen Smith died 1852.

By 1811, William Owens along with much of his family migrated to Greene County Ohio (outside Dayton). There he continued his Methodist beliefs and more than a few sons and grandsons became ministers.

His descendents are now rediscovering their ancestors and would like to fill in the gaps and find out where William Owens and Mary Bachelor originally came from. This Owen line is one of several that were in Brunswick County and were influenced by the rise Methodism during this period.

The photographs show the tobacco growing area in southern Brunswick Co. in Gholsonville. It was here that William Owens settled his freed slaves and eventually moved himself to protect them from slaveholding neighbors. Except for the paved roads, little appears to have changed in 200 years.
