Diegton, Basel, Switz., d: 1787 Hardy Co, VA. He was Chr: 13
Nov 1706 in the German Reformed Church by Frederick WETTSTEIN, with witnesses
Henry HEGLER, Claude BIDERT, Margaret BIDERT of Baerenwyl (record Vol.
11, p. 103, Basil). They married 13 Feb 1728 Switzerland.
Her parents were Martin MOHLER and Barbara HOFFMAN of Diegten, Canton,
Switzerland. In April 1736, the Mayor and Council of Basel allowed,
after payment of taxes and other considerations, (such as stating that
the "pure air free from all infections") him to emigrate. He left
23 Jul 1736. He appears on the list of Palatines which arrived on
the Princess Augusta in Philadelphia on 16 Sep 1736. They traveled
first by water to Rotterdam and by ship to Pennsylvania. They settled
first in Tulpehocken Valley, PA and later moved to VA where John Jacob
was naturalized in Augusta Co, VA 21 Nov 1764. There is a story from
P. BOSWELL regarding the children of this family: "Martin, Ursula, Anna
Maria, M. Malona, Mara Anna and Trinie Betty were taken prisoner by the
Indians in a raid on settlers in 1757, Martin escaped and returned after
6 mo., one of the Annas came back after 14 years, mentally deranged, came
to Ohio, died there; but the other three girls were never heard of again.
In 1758 the mother Sarah, was taken captive by the Indians, with 19 others
- she saw them tomahawked to death, she was the only survivor because an
Indian thought her worth saving. She was held prisoner about 6 years."
Another account in the Allegheny Passage by Emmett F. BITTINGER,
1990 says that the wife of Jacob PETERSON was taken captive Ap 17 or 28,
1758 and six children were taken prisoner by the Indians, with one escaping
during the French and Indian Wars. Martin PETERSON, born 1730, second
son of Jacob, was taken to the Sandusky towns and remained captive for
some time, later escaping. Another account in the same book states
3 of Jacob's daughters were taken captive, two of them never returning
while Anna was exchanged after 14 years at Upper Sandusky and returned.
In History of Grant and Hardy Co, by E. L. JUDY from P4:
Grant Co - "Near the village
lived for many years an extensive land owner. Jacob Peters or Peterson,
the name being used interchangeably; and it is thought that Fort Peterson
was named for this man, who suffered great loss from the Indians.
Six children were taken captive and his wife was massacred. He may
have given
the village its name." On P 205
of this book there is a contradiction as it shows that Mrs. Jacob PETERSON
was killed at Ft. Seybert by Indians and the prisoner lists include Martin,
5 children of Jacob, all near Petersburg and Jacob STOOKEY in Maryland."
They were members of the Evangelical Reformed Church, Frederick, Frederick Co, MD and in a list from that church was present on 10 Nov 1767, along with son Jacob and Elizabeth. Martin was also there. In 1773, he obtained 2 tracts of land in South Branch Manor from Lord Thomas FAIRFAX. There is a probate dated 25 Sep 1785 of a Bill of Sale in Hampshire Co, VA with witnesses Abel RANDALL, John WELTON and Conrad CARR in a list of Wills, Sale Bills, Inventories, Etc. Under "SALES" date of probate is 16 Dec 1790 with same witnesses.

when
they married. Another source
says his birth was Feb 13 1729. Eve was married for two weeks
to a Mr.
MOSER who was killed by Indians.
She was a prisoner of the Indians for about 11 years (6 years per History
of Clinton Co, OH)
before being returned to her people. She was probably the daughter
of Adam HARPER.
In the Grant and Hardy history,
P14 concerning leases from Denny FAIRFAX of parts of the South Branch
Manor, most of which were in
1790 and 1791 and one in 1792, included in this large list are HYRE's and
Jacob
PETERSON. Also on P 18,
Jacob is listed as a Grantor of parts of South Branch Manor under John
MARSHALL. Jacob became
a citizen 20 Nov, in the "fifth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord,
King
George the Third, by the grace
of God, King of Great Britain". P 20 lists Hardy Co Land Book Entries of
1786: Jacob PETERSON - 122 and
200 acres, Martin PETERSON- 200 acres, Michael PETERSON 128 acres.
On 17 & 18 of Mar 1786, Jacob
PETERSON was the overseer of Roads and Tithes with William JENNY.
Martin and Jacob PETERSON were
appointed 17 Mar 1786 to view ground for a road from Daniel
CATTERMAN's to Conrad CARR's
Mill and report. On 14 Apr 1786, Jacob PETERSON was appointed
overseer of road in place of
Sithman OUR from Thomas PARSON's to the Northern Neck Line, the tithables
on both Mill Creeks. Jacob
is on the Virginia Revolutionary War Honor Roll for either service or helping
in
some way in the war. They
had 2 sons and five daughters.

1789,
d: 16 Dec 1857 of pneumonia. The reason he left Virginia and moved
to Ohio in 1817 with his
brother-in-law
Leonard HAGLER, was his opposition to slavery. They emigrated to
Greene Co, OH,
carrying
their goods in two wagons, each drawn by 5 horses. Jacob drove
his own team, while his wife
rode
horse-back, carrying one child in her arms and another one, age 3, behind
her. They brought 17 head
of cattle,
driven by Benjamin STUCKY and Jonathan KETTEMAN. This journey of
350 miles took 21
days.
Their first winter was spent on Caesar Creek in Greene Co and on 12 Mar
1818, they moved to his
farm
on Anderson's Fork in Chester Twp, Clinton Co, OH. His farm (of 350
acres) was purchased from
Jesse
McKAY at $6. per acre. While Jacob was clearing his farm and taking
care of his stock, Hannah was
making
linens, flannels and cloth for clothing her family. He became
proficient in English (biographical
sketch
of History of Clinton Co, OH, 1882). Jacob was a Whig and voted
for John Quincy Adams for
President.
He united with the German Reformed Church at the age of 19 and then in
Ohio joined a
Reformed
congregation on Beaver Creek, Greene Co in about 1830. Then in 1833,
he joined the
Reformed
Church at Xenia, OH. He was visiting his daughter in Logan Co, and
contracted a cold on his
return
home. One story says he was thrown from his horse and never
fully recovered and that he had also
lost
the sight of one of his eyes. This turned into pneumonia and he died at
his son Abel's house. Jacob and
Hannah
had 10 children, nine who survived him.

Charles A. They lived in Delaware Co, OH for a short time.
In the 1880 census, Anna was at age
38 with her children. She moved back to Greene Co, after Jacob died.
NOTE: Another researcher
has his marriage to a Lizzie WHITSON in 1879 when he was 43.
I may have this wrong, but I would
think at age 43 there would have been another marriage before. If
this is wrong, then these children
are not this Jacob's. Will continue to search this.
