Jacob PETERSON and Eve Elizabeth (HARPER) MOSER. The 1800 Hardy Co, VA Tax List has Leonard
HAGLER, 1 white male tithable & 5 horses: 1810 Hardy Co, VA Tax List has Leonard 1 white tithable & 6
horses.  The following information was in Robinson's History of Greene Co, OH and in Portrait & Biographical
Album of  Greene and Clark Counties, OH published by Chapman Bros, 1890. It states they moved from Hardy Co, VA to Greene Co, OH by wagon.  They had only 2 sons which reached age of maturity.  But I think
I found another Leonard, Jr living in Greene Co in 1825 which says he was the oldest son.Leonard and Mary
are buried in Shook Cem. Greene Co, OH.  In Leonard's will dated 11 Jan 1831, he mentions all children
except Phebe even though she was still living.  I now question if she really was a daughter of his as per the
IGI and this history.  Mary's headstone says birth date 1769 as per cemetery book.

her  birth was 18 Aug 1801 VA but her headstone says she was 82y, 11m, 26d.  His headstone says 85y, 9m 24
da.   Nellie RABER, (Descendants of Lienert and Clara (Lutzler) HEIER) ca 1925 page 189 states he was
born 31 Oct 1794.  He died from general debility and she from old age. Anna was the daughter of Henry
Christian FUDGE and Elizabeth NICHOLAS. In The Christian Fudge Family by Frank M. SELLERS, it
states she was daughter of Christian and he also says Samuel was born 31 Oct 1794.

In early life Samuel emigrated to Warren Co, OH.  After a couple of years, he returned to Virginia and
brought his family back.  He was in Greene Co by 1820. He cleared 150 acres of land and as his resources
increased he added to the property.  At the time of his death, he owned 200 acres.  They were both members
of the German Reformed Church and Sam was a WHIG until that party dissolved and he then became a
Republican.  They had 15 children.

In Samuel's will written 19 Jul 1866 and proven 24 Aug 1880 Greene Co, OH, he directs that William L. be
repaid out of the others inheritance for the cost of the marble monument on Moses' grave if they hadn't
already paid their share. They are buried in HAGLER Cemetery on Stone Rd, New Jasper Twp. Greene
Co, OH, the family burying ground on the home farm and a tall monument marks the place.

     Greene Co, OH. He is buried in the Hagler Cem., Greene Co, OH.  She married 2nd Silas MATTHEWS of
     Clinton Co, OH and after he died, she went to New Mexico to stay with her youngest daughter, Mrs.

W. VA by E. L. JUDY, 1951 between 1735 and 1760 Leonard HYRE and Rudy HYRE were among some of
the first settlers that mostly settled in South Branch Valley.  Per ROHRBAUGH’s Genealogy, there were
residing in Tulpehocken, Berks Co, PA in 1739 and in Virginia in 1756.

A meeting was held in his house in Benken in 1736 (Alleghany Passage by Emmert F. BITTINGER) to discuss
migration to America.  Others recorded by the suspicious authorities as attending were Antoni RUEGER,
Jacob KUENTZLIN and Hans KAPP.  On 24 Sep 1737, Leonhard and Clara with their children and her father
Rudolf arrived in the Port of Philadelphia aboard the “Virtuous Grace”.  Their daughter Clara died at Cowes,
Isle of Wight from smallpox during the voyage.  The family settled in Tuplehocken Twp, Berks Co, PA and
between 1743 and 1750 took the Great Wagon Road in search of new lands in the back country of Maryland
and Virginia and settling in Augusta Co, VA now known as Petersburg, Grant Co, W. VA.  The families in the
wagon train were the HYER, REAGER and SCHAUB families.

The Hyer land was on the south side of the South Branch and west of Petersburg.  The Hyer family cemetery
is nearby.

Leonhard wrote his will (signed in German script) on 13 Mar 1768 in Hampshire, VA and it was probated
12 May 1772.  Mentioned in his will: Wife Clara, leaves his land, house and goods as long as she lives;
children: Leonard, Rudolph, Barbara (m: Jacob SHOBE), Elizabeth (m: Martin SHOBE), Eve (m: Sebastian
HAGLER), Magdalene (m: Sigmund HOMAN) and another daughter mentioned separately, Orsilla.
Leonard was to have the plantation by “paying one hundred pounds to his Brethern”.  Leonard HYER &
Martin SHOBE were executors.  His will is in the Virginia Room of the library of the University of West
Virginia, Morgantown, W. VA (Rohrbach Genealogy by Lewis Bunker ROHRBAUGH, 1970).  There was a
bond posted for him 12 May 1772 with Leonard HIERS, John MARTIN, Michael THORN, Jacob HINKLE,
Jacob BREAK and also a bond - Date of Probate 13 Jun 1778 with Henry SHIPLER as a witness.

Reported by Willis Taylor: On the premises of George Harman, two miles South of  Petersburg in Grant Co,
stands an antiquated log house formerly the residence of Martin Shobe, Sr, deceased.  The day it was being
raised, the workmen were visited by a War party of 80 Catawba Indians, painted, feathered and fully
equipped for their bloody work.  They chattered friendly with the Whites and passed peaceably on going
north to fight the Delawares”(Kerchivals History).

1783 and proven 16 Jun 1786 Hampshire, W. VA.  She wrote her will 16 Nov 1790 Hardy Co, VA.  In the
Grant and Hardy history there were also leases from Denny FAIRFAX of parts of the South Branch Manor,
most of which were in 1790 and one in 1792 of which a Leonard HYRE, Michael HYRE and Jacob
PETERSON were mentioned.  At the time of Leonhard’s death he owned 227 acres which went to his heirs.

Co, W. VA, Dolly (RIFFLE) PLYMAN b: 1770, d: 30 Jan 1865 Braxton Co, W. VA, the daughter of Jacob and Dorothy RIFFLE.  Leonhard was captured by Indians at the age of 13 and held captive for about 3 years.  He
is in a list of prisoners that surrendered to General BOUQUET by the Indians in 1764.  He served the
Colonies in the Revolutionary War under Ensign Stephen ASBY.  On 26 Aug 1837, Leonard’s possessions
were valued at $18.00 and were purchased by his wife Dolly.

In History of Grant and Hardy Co, P 96 is the following under “An Old Landmark”.
Deed Dec 26, 1814 Leonard Hyre to Rudolph Shobe conveys 1/5 of 223 acres or 45 acres, designated as
No. 61 on the east side of the South Branch with boundaries as follows:  Beginning near a walnut on the bank
of the river and running with John Hyre’s line south 15 west 144 poles to a white oak on the hill, corner to
said John Hyre and Byrns: thence south 35 east 44 poles to a white oak by the side of a run in a hollow,
corner of the said Leonard Hyre, Sr; thence with his line north 28 ½ east 162 poles to the river near about
where Fort George formerly stood; thence up the meanders of the river to the beginning containing 45 acres.
