THOMAS PREWIT

Thomas Prewitt was born about 1616 in Salisburg, Wiltshire, England. He transported to America in 1636 to Charles River County, Virginia. Thomas married Unknown and is thought to have had these three sons. Thomas died after 1658 in Virginia.

Henry Prewitt was born about 1654 in Virginia and died about 1722 in Henrico Co., Virginia. He married on August 20, 1691 in Henrico Co., to Rebecca Dobbs born about 1654 and died in 1748. Rebecca was the daughter of James Dobbs, who transported to America on December 06, 1680. Henry and Rebecca are thought to have had the following children.

Thomas Prewitt, Sr. was born ca. 1693 in Henrico Co., Va. and died ca. 1759 in Halifax Co., Va. He married ca. 1719 to Mary Chastain Durcray born ca. 1680 died bef. 1752. Mary was the daughter of Peter Chastain and the widow of Nicholas Durcray, Sr. Nicholas and Mary transported to America on the ship "The Nassau" in 1699. They had two sons, Nicholas, Jr. and Jean. Thomas and Mary settled futher up the James River from his father's land at Almond Creek, in Goochland Co., which was formed from Henrico Co. In 1837, Thomas brough land on Stock's Creek, Amelia Co., Va. and lived there until his move to southern Va. on Catawba Creek in Lunenburg Co., Va. which later became Halifax Co.

Solomen Prewitt was born ca. 1775 in SC and died between 1820 and 1830. It is not known if he died in Pendleston Dist., SC or moved to Ala. with the rest of his brothers in 1822. He married Lucretia Hanks b. 1781 d. Sept. 1849 in Chickasaw Co., Ms., Daughter of Luke Hanks II and Nancy Dale. Lucretia was recorded in Fayette Co., Ala. in 1830. Lucretia, along with two of her sons, was in Chickasaw Co., Ms. by 1841. Solomen and Lucretia were listed on the 1810 and 1820 census of Pendleston Dist., SC as having five sons and five daughters. The following are thought to be their sons. No records have been found of their daughters at this time.

1833- In the fall of 1833, Joe (Josiah) Pruitt killed Berry Arnold, a quarrel arising at a neighborhood cider-drinking, in which Pruittgot badly beaten, went directly home, took down a loaded gun, against the wishes of the lady who feared mischief, laid wait for Arnold and shot him dead as he passed. Pruitt fled to Texas (Shelby Co.) and was killed some years afterwards while a member of a Regulator Company on the side of the law and order, and his murderer was killed by his son, a youth of seventeen years. The gun with which Arnold was shot could still be seen in 1856 at the home of Dudley Prewitt in North Pickens. It is thought that Josiah remarried in Tx. and had two sons.

Robert Walter Prewitt was born in January 02, 1811 in Pendleston Dist., SC and died June 04, 1897 in Calhoun Co., Ms. he married about 1848 in Ala. to Ansenith Nancy "Neithie" Winter born in 1821 in Rutherford Co., NC died in 1868 in Calhoun Co., Ms. Nancy was the daughter of Mitchell Winter and Nancy Elizabeth Moore. Robert and Neithie moved to Chickasaw Co., Ms. before 1841 along with both of their parents and several brothers. Mitchell was getting in bad health so Robert and Neithie, along with the Winter's moved back to Fayette Co., Ala. before 1850. Prehaps, Mitchell wanted to see his children and grandchildren that had remained in Fayette Co., Ala. before he died. Mitchell died in 1851. Robert and Neithie moved to Calhoun Co., Ms. in the spring of 1852 settling in the Benela Community. Elizabeth Winter and all but one of Neithie's siblings came with them. Robert and Neithie were in the Sarepta Community before 1868. Robert was listed in the 1870 Calhoun Co., Census as living in the Banner Community and had remarried. He was still living in the Banner Community in 1880.

John Hubert "Jehu" Prewett was born Aug. 26, 1849 in Fayette Co., Ala. He moved to Miss. as a small child with his family settling in the Benela Community of Calhoun Co. in the spring of 1852. He is thought to have been married as many as three times, but there is no records of his first two marriages at this time. Jehu married bef. Aug. 1875 in Calhoun Co., Ms. to Mary Francis Gentry. They are listed in the 1900 Calhoun Co. Census as having been married 25 years with 16 childred, 15 living. In the 1910 census they are listed as having 17 childred with 15 living. I only have records of fourteen of the living children. Jehu was a farmer and a member of the Masonic Lodge. His death certificate states he died of measles. He is buried in the Old Big Rock (Hensley) Cemetery in Calhoun Co., Ms. Mary Frances Gentry was born Aug. 04, 1861 in Pontotoc Co., Ms. to John Newton Gentry and Nancy Jane Screws. She was a small, frail women marrying at the age of 13. After Jehu's death, Mary Frances moved to Pontotoc Co., Ms. She died Nov. 26, 1954 at the age of 93.

JEHU


Jehu and Mary Frances was killing hogs on Saturday morning, Nov. 02, 1900. Willie Ann was running and fell in a pot of boiling water and scalded to death. She is buried in Camp Ground Cemetery in Calhoun Co., Ms. The cemetery is in the woods now and not easily accessibly due to undergrowth. Leland was strung to death by bumble bees. I do not know where he is buried. The only records of him is his date of birth in an old family bible.

Demmie was a mid-wife. She delivered a baby in March of 1936. It was cold and she had to go outside to the "out house". She fell and it was morning before anyone found her. She caught pneumonia and died.

James William "Jim" Prewett was born May 11, 1880 in Calhoun Co., Ms. to Jehu Prewett and Mary Frances Gentry. He married Edna Mae Henderson about 1899/1900 in Calhoun Co. They lived in the Chicken Bone Community near Serapta, Calhoun Co., for several years. They moved to the Old Robbs Community, Pontotoc Co., Ms. before 1920 and bought a farm. Jim died on July 01, 1960. Edna was born May 18, 1881 in Calhoun Co. to Samuel Robert "Bob" Henderson and Rebecca Ann "Becky" Jenkins. She died on November 22, 1968. They are buried in the Old Robbs cemetery.
