Notes for Thomas Chilton

Thomas Chilton is believed to have settled in Jefferson County by at least 1793
when his daughter Anna married John Inman on 24 Dec 1793. He bought 150 acres
of land on Long Creek in 1794, and 30 adjoining acres in 1800 [1803]. His will
dated 4 January 1807 recorded in Jefferson County Courthouse, Book 1, page 192,
names son in laws; John Inman, William Love, and George LaRue, and two sons
Thomas and James. Names wife "Sapphira", and land to be divided between the two
sons on the death of their mother.
John Frederick Dorman in "The Virginia Genealogist", Vol 15, No. 1, page 37
states; "Thomas, born ca.1752. He married Suffiah _____, born ca 1756. He took
the oath of fidelity in Montgomery Co., MD in 1778. He is probably the Thomas
Chilton who on 12 Sept 1777 was commissioned ensign in the Upper Battalion of
Montgomery County and on 4 Aug 1780 was second lieutenant of Capt. Archibald
Allen's Company of the Upper Battalion."
It is believed Suffiah and Sapphira [Sophia] are the same person.
