Notes for James Chilton
James Chilton married Jane Langdon has been verified as the son of
Thomas Chilton married Sapphira. Two James were married in Jefferson County;
James m Jane Langdon in 1816 (lived in Jeff Co). Another James m Nancy Clark in
1796 (moved to Missouri in 1820's) where he filed his will on 29 Dec 1829 in
Madison County, MO. James M. served in the war of 1812, volunteering in 1813 as
a substitute for James McFarland. Served until 17 May 1814, sold his discharge
to David Windell or James Clark and re-entered service. He applied and received
bounty land in 1851. This bounty land however, is not likely to have been in
East Tennessee. [Ref: research by Grady Beierbach of NM, & National Archives
Record]. James is listed as Taxpayer on 336 acres of land on Long Creek in 1853,
1854, & 1855; in 1856 as James Sr. and James Jr., and in 1865 as James heirs.
James is buried in the Chilton cemetery about 1 mile north east of White
Pine, TN on a Franklin farm, on a hill overlooking Long Creek. He died
intestate with personal estate inventory and sales in December 1858. Wife,
Jane Chilton was a buyer at the sale.
James and Jane had 15 children born in Jefferson County, TN [Ref: "CHILTON"
family Bible, Lamesa, TX & East TN research by writer]
James land on Long Creek divided among heirs, in 12 shares. All
shares to Thomas Biddle. The 3 children not named; Ann b 1819 & Willey b 1824,
both believed to have died young, and Garrett b 1822, named in Land Deed in
1849 and no mention later.
James Chelton is listed in Capt. Rilly's Company in 1822 with 180 acres of
land. In 1826 James Chilton obtained a Land Grant for 86 adjoining acres, that
mentioned his 150 acre tract. In 1838 James Chilton bought 100 acres of
adjoining land from William Love. The 1827 Taxpayer list reflects his Land
Grant of 1826 that includes the 30 acres bought by Thomas in 1800 [1803], shown
as 150 acres of DL (Deeded Land) and 84 acres SL (School Land). The 1853
Taxpayer list has 336 acres total; believed to be the original 150 acres in
1794, 86 acres for James Grant in 1826, and the 100 acres from William Love in
1838. James land has been proven to include the Chilton private cemetery.
