in 1856. Joseph and wife Minerva died at a young age. Reference "Goodspeed
History of East Tennessee"; "John L. Chilton, a farmer in the 12th district, was
born in Jefferson Co., TN, September 17, 1853, the son of Joseph and Minerva
(Scruggs) Chilton, natives of Tennessee. The father was a farmer, and died when
our subject was but four years of age, and his mother but six years later. His

in the Chilton cemetery, about 1 mile north east of White Pine, on a Franklin
farm, on a hilltop overlooking Long Creek. The cemetery has 2 marked tombstones,
one Joseph Chilton died 11 Mar 1858 (40y 3m 15d). Beside him is James Chilton

with Inventory in 1858. This has notes, etc. of the estate of James Chilton
(Decs) belonging to the estate of Joseph Chilton (Decs). Mentions a note on
Alex Sartain & James M. Copeland for $15.30 due 27 April, $12.10 which belongs
to Mrs. Minerva Chilton for a rifle gun sold at the sale. This might imply
there had been a sale of Joseph Chilton's decs Estate; no record has been found
in the courthouse. Land division to minor heir children John Love and Kate A.
Chilton in 1877.
