Garden of Fugitives | |
| If nothing else gets to you in Pompeii, viewing the bodies will. A vegetable garden at the time of the eruption, it took on its appropriate name when people including entire families died here trying to flee out the city gates down to the sea. One of the women found was pregnant at the time. |

The children's bodies got to me most. |

Although the flesh had decomposed, the shapes of the bodies remained in the ash. As bodies were found, plaster was poured into the hollow, capturing the figures in the exact poses they died in. The bones are still present inside the plaster. |

The view from the wall overlooking the garden is beautiful, but I couldn't help feeling sad as I stood looking down into the area where all those people died.
