    its transit covers 
    much more ground
     Staten Island Ferry  is free 
    and goes to another burrough
    of New York
     Catalina Island Ferry  costs 
    $30 and takes you to another 
    world
    Los Angeles
     Hudson River  cuts a majestic 
    swath through the area with 
    awe-inspiring national and 
    state parks lining its shores 
    and islands
     Los Angeles River  is a trickle 
    relegated to a concrete ditch
    New York
     New York beaches  are great 
    in the summer but cold and 
    usually closed in the winter
     Los Angeles beaches  are 
    legendary, and many with good 
    reason.  Open all year round.
