Hai Zheng - Cellist

HAI ZHENG, Cellist, is Artist-in-Residence and Assistant Professor of Music at Southwestern University since 1995. Ms. Zheng has appeared and recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra in London and the Amatius Orchestra in New York at Lincoln Center. She has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Europe, North America, and Asia; with Paul Olefsky in England; and Aldo Parisot in China. She made her European debuts at Oxford Town Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, England, and her New York City debuts at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Barge Music Series, and Steinway Hall. These concerts were highly acclaimed by The New York Times, Oxford Daily Mail, and Strad Magazine. She also made her Chicago debut on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center and her recent Vienna debut was at Boesendorfer Hall. Her upcoming Asia concert tour with Dr. Tamagawa includes conservatories in Guang Zhou, Macau, and a performance for the Asia Society in Hong Kong.

Ms. Zheng held the highest honor from the Shanghai Academy of Music and was promoted one year earlier to study at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with Prof. Ding-Chen Chen. Her first cello teacher was Prof. Ki-Ling Lui. She came to the US in 1985 to study with the world renowned cellist, Paul Olefsky at UT-Austin. She has performed in the master classes of Gendron, Nothas, Parisot, and Tortelier. She also studied with Yo Yo Ma during his concert tour in Texas. She has received many important awards, prizes, and scholarships including the Shapleigh Award from the Feuermann International Cello Competition, Presidential Award from The University of Texas, Excellent Performance Award from the Tcherepnin Society, Honorary Citizen Award by the Governor of Texas, and scholarships from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

Hai Zheng has performed for major television and radio networks on three continents. She was the first woman from China to be invited to the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. She was invited twice to perform and give master classes at the Hong Kong International Summer Youth Festival. As a winner of the Feuermann Competition, she participated in the second International Cello Festival in Kronberg, Germany. She has appeared as guest artist at Casals International Music Festival in Zermatt, Switzerland. Ms. Zheng has 5 CDs to her credit. Her recording of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with the English Chamber Orchestra was chosen as a "top pick" by the magazine Recording Direct, and received a rave review from the international Strad magazine. Her CD of cello and piano music, "Rhapsody," with pianist Kiyoshi Tamagawa was displayed at the third World Cello Congress in Baltimore, Maryland and was chosen by SHAR Music Company for its worldwide "Artist and Repertoire Recording" website at www.SHARmusic.com.

As an active chamber musician, Ms. Zheng has been invited as a guest cellist to appear in concerts with the Enso, Miro, and Shanghai Quartets. She has performed in the Georgetown Festival of Arts, Manchester International Summer Music Festival in Vermont, Meadowmount Summer String School, and Mohawk Trail Summer Festival. She was recently invited as an Artist-in-Residence by her alma mater, Shanghai Conservatory, to give her debut recital and master classes in Shanghai, China. She appeared in Shanghai TV news and was featured in an interview article in the China Overseas Chamber of Commerce Magazine.

Ms. Zheng also serves as the assistant director of the International Program at St. Stephen's School. She is a member of the Asia Society, the Littlefield Society, and Chancellor's Council of the UT system. She belongs to the group of "Notable Women" for the Long Performing Arts Center. She is the Artistic Director of the Young Musicians Festival Competition sponsored by the Asian American Culture Center. Ms. Zheng performs on an Amati Cello, circa 1580 (known as the King Charles IX).
