I.
Amid the elm and bank and wood
Silver-clad she stately stood
Serenity the air had filled
All the world stood calmly stilled.
The world resign'd to peace's way
Such was the mood on that one day
When erst we met and said hello
In Dirabeth, not long ago.
II.
The seas were low, the stars were high
The moon shone softly in the sky
When last we met to say farewell
Before the Silver City fell.
Her walls were made of strongest stone
When there, nearby, we stood alone.
At last you turned, from me to part
And thereat went with you my heart.
I glanced back at the silver wall
Beside that sparkling waterfall
But Dirabeth, me once so fair
Was naught beside your moonlit hair.
Yet 'way you walked in fading light
Passed at length from out my sight
So slowly turning, back I went
Alas! without my heart's consent.
