Editorial: Guild Purpose
Editorial: Guild Purpose

It frustrates me, when I examine some of the other guilds of this world. Guilds wherein Iksar take orders from High Elves. Guilds wherein Erudites take orders from Trolls. Guilds wherein no order exists. Some guilds state their official purpose as to have fun or describe themselves as a good group of people to group with. This makes little sense. Having fun is the point of playing EverQuest, regardless of whether or not a guild membership is obtained. People to group with are readily available wherever one goes. In other words, these guilds have no purpose whatsoever. I would like to see the charters they submitted to the Gamemasters, because I cannot fathom why a Gamemaster would approve such a pointless affiliation.

The name of a guild says much. For example, my guild, the High Keepers of Odus, serves as an Erudite-only government for the continent of Odus and its offland possessions. The guild called Holy Order of Tunare sounds like a wonderful guild whereof any Elf should be proud to hold membership. Backing this up, the guild leader is a KoadaDal Paladin. Now consider the guild called Dirty-Faced Dragons. Excuse me? The man who came up with that should be purged (see Jailmaster Lius for details). All right, all right, but Im sure theres a story behind the name and this is a wonderful, logical affiliation. Unfortunately, no description was entered on GuildMagic.COM; however, perhaps we can figure it out from the race-class combinations therein. Every class is represented, which leaves their alignment somewhat ambiguous. Ah, but what races are allowed in? A quick examination of their guild roster on that same website shows that the guild leader is a Dwarven Paladin. There are also 4 Humans and 9 Wood Elves. The guild is obviously of a good alignment. But just a moment, can someone explain the 7 Dark Elves, 3 Iskar, and that Troll?

What purpose could such a guild possibly claim to have? To unite all the races of Norrath? Preposterous! Their official website states that the Dirty-Faced Dragons pledge to uphold the rights and protect the well-being of the citizens of Norrath. Why in the name of Prexus would a Dwarven Paladin want to uphold the rights of a Troll??? Trolls have no rights! The truth is that this guild has no point whatsoever, beyond getting twinked, power-levelled, and something that has to do with the word uber, whatever that means. I always thought it was German for about.

Remember, everyone that is intelligent enough to read this, that the purpose of a guild is not to take advantage of other players abilities for your own personal game, but rather to provide you with an environment wherein you will become acquainted with a group of people with similar goals to your own. It is the very defention of an RPG, a role-playing game. If your guild is such, then you have found a good one.
