If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more violence. If the Jews put down their weapons today, there would be no more Israel. - Jan Markell |
The fact is that your history books are wrong. There has been only one war in Israel. As with most things, it has its ups and downs. Sometimes it's worse, and sometimes it's better (in relative terms) - but the war continues. Our neighbors always want to destroy us, but every so often they take a break in order to regroup their forces or to catch their breath.
Israel's favorite oxymoron is - "a routine emergency situation." That certainly does create a certain degree of tension, but it does vary with each war so that we can be sure that things will always be exciting.
During the 1991 Gulf War, people were concerned about the immense Scud missiles that were fired at Israel. Although that fear remained, we discovered that Scuds are shot only after nightfall. During the daytime Israel returned to semi-normal life, although people walked around with gas masks and survival equipment. Most people tried to return home as night fell, and those who remained away from home were visibly concerned.
A separate sealed room in each home prevented the potentially noxious nuclear, biological, and chemical gases from entering, but everybody knew that the precautions were neither perfect nor foolproof.
Many businesses and enterprises that had contacts with foreign entities closed.
There is no doubt that the war situation takes its toll on our daily lives. However, there is also no doubt that Israelis have accepted it as a reality, and have become stronger as a result. There is also no doubt that it has not stopped serious people from coming here to live.
