Some time ago people never saw guards in Israel.
Yes, there were occasional instances of thievery, people would even steal sometimes from a store or from other people. But after all we're all Jews and we are a higher class of people and nobody has to guard us when we enter or leave a store.
Even today people rarely check those who leave the store or other business establishments.
Entering it is a different situation, however, and the guards that you have seen in airports around the world and the security that you have seen is much more widespread in Israel - it's not just for the airport it's for the entire business world and just about any institution that you enter.
Interestingly, the need for guards arose just as there was a very large increase in aliyah from many countries. The unskilled people immediately had jobs as guards after receiving minimal training and Israel is now blessed with guards from many countries - but rarely native Israelis.
It's as if people joined together from around the world to come to Israel to help protect it.
