People can manage in Israel very well without a car. As a matter of fact, those who do not have a car enjoy various advantages. The car is a burden for many people.

We have more than our share of wars. When there is a war, cars may be requisitioned by the army. This used to happen frequently. The army used civilian vehicles because it did not have enough of its own. In some instances, the car was returned to the owner in reasonably good condition, but in most cases there were good reasons for complaints.

Granted, the army would agree to repair the damage, but repairs were often carried out the way soldiers repair things - and certainly not the way that a skilled craftsman would. In other words, people did lose out substantially by giving their cars to the army.

Israeli drivers face a constant battle of nerves. They tailgate other cars on extremely narrow roads. The scene of a car edging out from a side street or forcing his way into a main thoroughfare can destroy anybody's nerves.

These are only some of the reasons why many Israelis opt for a bus instead of a car.

Where do you want to go now?
