The Israeli political parties would like their electorate to believe that they have a choice among clear objectives. Indeed, the parties may even vote in the Knesset according to these directives.
However, there is an abundance of political parties on the Israeli scene, many of which are born on the eve of each election and some that die soon thereafter. The resulting great turnover in directions and ideologies makes it very difficult to anticipate how any party will move.
Yet, a surprisingly large percentage of the electorate still believes that the political system has the power to improve their lives. They vote with the conviction that this is the only way that the situation will improve. Many of them even believe that politicians care more about them than about the ability to make lavish, free bar mitzvahs and weddings for their kids.
