Parties write platforms in order to make their candidate look good among the widest possible range of people within his own party. The platform is not designed for the real world. It is never intended to be carried out.
You might think of the platform as a theoretical, hypocritical, irrelevant, or phony document that says the following:
"If there were no opposition or if I would not get elected, this is what I would stand for.
"However, there is an opposition and I may get elected. In that case, of course, the platform shall be considered null and void."
If the candidate is elected then the platform is set aside so it is again - irrelevant.
The big question is why people pay attention to the platform. Why do they read it? Why do they comment on it? Why do they care what it says? It has nothing to do with the Real World anyhow.
