Jack Spratt could eat no fat Two Israelis, three opinions.
Everybody in Israel has opinions. It's not just regular thoughts and ideas. Everybody thinks that their opinions are correct.
Not only that but everybody in Israel is convinced that his way of running the country is right and that the way that it's being done now is wrong.
Well, those who feel that it's being run wrong or incorrectly they certainly have a good point.
But it's easy to say that it's being run wrong and it's more difficult to select from all of the ideas of how to run it correctly. Not everybody's idea on how it should be run is going to be the best way, of course. How do we know which is the right way?
That's the problem and now of course we're beginning to understand one of the issues of running the country.
Other issues are that the country isn't being run. The people do what they want to. The American government pressures the way it wants to. The government pressures the way it wants to. And the opposition pressures the way it wants to.
No wonder the concept that balagan started in Israel.
It's not just that people have little ideas that they pull off the cuff. Many of these ideas have been thought about, discussed in advance, worked on. They're based on articles that they might have read in the newspaper. People have come to absolute, definite conclusions to the point that they are willing to die for their beliefs and their opinions about how Israel should be run.
Add to this the fact that influential people - rabbis, politicians, friends, coworkers, the bosses, relatives, taxi drivers, policemen, barbers, store owners and friends all come with their own concepts and they help refine people's decisions. When people talk about it they come with noisy and convincing arguments the other way and people have to find arguments and ways to defend their own points of view. As a result their ideas are refined and clarified. By the time you hear what they have to say, they are quite certain that they know just what should be done. They have in their minds, at least, the right way of doing things.
No place else in the world there are people so convinced about the right that things should be done as Israelis.
The old adage of two Israelis three opinions may or may not be true, but that's not even the point. The point is that the opinions that people do have are very very firm in their minds.
