Our description of the political system is tantalizingly straightforward and clear - in theory. In practice the situation demands clarification. Must we accept and maintain a senseless political system?
The answer is based less upon the stated goals and policies of the political parties, and more on the situation in practice. Most Israelis know the declared position of the parties but they rarely get what they bargained for when their parties are in power.
So, why cant the electorate get what it deserves?
The answer is more complex and twisted than would be expected. The existing plethora of parties makes it nearly impossible for any prime minister to claim a majority of the Knesset. He thus has to beg for support from other parties in order to remain in office.
Under such circumstances, there is no hope of getting what we deserve.
Unless we really don't deserve any better than this sad situation!
