Allies

The natural tendency of any country seems to be to avoid Israel and not to be its ally. The benefits of becoming an ally seem to be questionable to the country and Israel, on the other hand, seems to look for allies. Israel is very happy when a country allies itself with it especially if it is an arab country or a country that is leaning towards the arab cause.

However, these allies might, in many cases, stay enemies. The benefits are greater for the allies than for Israel in many cases.

Each time that a country wants to be an ally it usually exacts a price from Israel. They always have an opinion about the way Israel should handle its own affairs.

With a growing number of allies, each one pulling in its own direction, that can be very difficult. When an individual country makes demands of Israel then it is usually not in Israel's interest. When the community of nations has many allies with Israel, each one pulling in its own direction and making demands, it can be nearly impossible.

Added to this all of the Jews in Israel and in the Diaspora many of whom act according to their own golus mentality, each one wanting to please others, the countries of the world, the individuals around the world, even visiting dignitaries who have their own opinions and possibly also visiting professors or corporate leaders, each of whom may have their own opinions and each one in a position they want to tell Israel what that opinion is. This makes it very difficult because Israel is going to try to please them as well. Even though they know nothing about Israel. They just decided to come for a visit but they do have an opinion as they come.

It's no longer a situation of two Jews and three opinions. It's a situation in which there are an astounding number of opinions and most of these opinions are not in Israel's best interests. At best, they could be even handed, but rarely in Israel's sincere interest.

Thus, all of these allies come with a great price. It is questionable whether it is advisable for Israel to search for these allies.

Am levadad yishkon is possibly a much better way of handling things. At least that way Israel can look after its own interests rather than have to deal with everybody else's opinion about how things should be run.

It's generally a one-way involvement, of course. Heaven forfend that Israel should have an opinion on the activities of another country, institution, corporation, or individual. That would be meddling in the affairs of others and Israel would be taken to task for doing so.

It's a one-way meddling.

Alas! It was apparently not meant to be that way.
