The newspapers lie to us. This has various ramifications, including the the fact that people may expect mistruths to be printed in the newspaper. Thus, when important events occur, including terrorist attacks, some people may assume that the newspapers misled them. There will often be accusations of a conspiracy.
This accusation does require some clarification. After all, the terrorist attack did occur, and the victim reported in the newspaper was probably killed as a result.
However, the circumstances surrounding the death are often questionable. We often assume that the newspapers reported a certain story for their own interest. We can also assume that the newspapers were simply wrong.
People have lost their faith and confidence in the news.
After John F. Kennedy was killed, the media featured a certain illustrated report. Everybody saw the pictures of what happened, but they did not see the actual shooting. As a result, numerous books and articles appeared. The writers described what were supposedly the real causes for Kennedy's assassination, and pointed to the real assassins in some cases.
After the Twin Towers incident, there were similar calls for an investigation into a possible conspiracy. It led to a war in Afghanistan and then in Iraq. The conspiracy was presented in a convincing way and it was difficult to argue with the newly presented facts.
In Israel, the murder of Yitzchak Rabin was said to be the result of a conspiracy. The person who was incarcerated for life was said to be a victim of a trap laid by the security services, and he was not the one who killed Rabin.
The important issue here is not the perpetrator of the crime. The important issue is that journalism has failed. People do not believe what they are told. People assume that they are being fed incorrect information, and then some of them try to discover the truth. Sometimes they succeed, and in other times they fail. There is no longer any trust.
We live in a world of lies. People do not believe what they are told. There is considerable justification for this unfortunate feeling.
True, there are times in which it is good and proper to withhold information from the public for security or other reasons. This should be limited, and sometimes the coverup will and should lead to a free and impartial investigation.
But the most important thing is that as people lose faith in their journalists, in their elected officials, and even in our own ability to maintain stable relationships as individuals, then our civilization is surely coming to an end.
