There is little chance
for people to get together
as long as most of us want to be
in the front of the bus,
the back of the shul,
and the middle of the road
- Source unknown

Some people feel that a red carpet will be rolled out for them, a brass band will begin to play, and everybody will jump to attention and handle their every need as soon as they arrive in Israel. They expect people to run out and befriend them, and bureaucratic governmental agency officials to locate and then greet them. They expect a car to be driven over to them, possibly with a chauffeur, in order to bring them directly to their new, inexpensive house in a wonderful neighborhood. After all, they arrived in Israel, the land of Israel, and they heard that the contry welcomes immigrants.

Well, it ain't gonna happen.

True, Israelis are happy (but not ecstatic) that you arrived. We are pleased that you finally had the sense to do what you should have done long ago.

It's also true that you do belong in Israel.

However, most people will not worship you when you come. You will have to get yourself settled. You will have to put in most of the effort. You will have to show that you care.

If not, you're going to fail.

This is one of the reasons that some people have discovered that Israel is not for them. Other people have expected to try out Israel to decide if it's suitable for them. Yet others have come with no plans or ideas for succeeding. Of course, they are at the top of the list of people who make yerida.

Still others send their children to Israel to get them fixed up. Those kids bounce back and forth like yoyos. Finally, there are the people who try to determine whether it will be better for them in Israel or in the States.

All of these people did it wrong.

So, what is the best way to make aliyah? Well, the first step is to get involved. However, it also means getting involved in the right way.

That's what this section is about.

Where do you want to go now?
