Another institution that is feared is the National Insurance Institute. It works in strange ways and it does not necessarily seem to give the feeling that it is for the benefit of the recipients.
National Insurance compensates people who do reserve duty, it helps the disabled and the aged.
So far it sounds like the system in just about any country or location, but there are major differences.
For example, people who are employed pay their share of National Insurance through their salary so they really don't feel it. People who are salaried simply see their bottom line and they know how much they've earned and it disappears like any other deduction.
The interesting thing is that the unemployed people are required to pay National Insurance out of their pockets.
Now how is somebody who isn't working supposed to get the money to pay the National Insurance? They may receive some unemployment insurance, but if part of it has to go to National Insurance then we have a ridiculous cycle.
Don't try to get away without paying that National Insurance, either. The laws are very strict about it and you'll get into a lot of trouble if you don't pay.
The National Insurance as any other Israeli company or institution may go broke, just as American Social Security is always under threat of going broke and nobody knows what the future will be.
This is less of a serious issue in Israel than in other locations simply because in Israel everything is on the verge of going broke, so one more company that is not viable really doesn't matter that much and isn't taken very seriously.
And, yes, getting called down to an audit by the National Insurance Institute is nearly as terrifying as getting called down to an audit by Income Tax authorities.
