Until just a little while ago Israel was blessed with the absence of shopping malls. It was one less place for kids to hang out unsupervised and from an educational point of view there are advantages to the fact that there is not an exciting noisy fun filled place with entertainment and music which attracts the kids.
This has changed.
Every city and even village has at least one shopping mall, sometimes several, and the kids love to congregate there.
Let's clarify. This is not a large department store in which you can find a selection of everything you want, but rather a collection of small shops each one owned independently. Together with an occasional larger supermarket or other large store thrown in for good measure, and perhaps some banks and a post office.
Unfortunately, these shopping centers seem to be doing quite well indeed which is a reason why they may well last for a long time.
Some of them also have interesting names. A shopping mall in Hebrew is a kanyon which means a place to buy from the word liknot and a "buying place" is a kanyon. There's a rather large kanyon up north in the northern part of the country which has been dubbed "The Grand Kanyon". Cute.
