Whom to marry

You may already be married. If so, then you can simply set your Aliyah deadline together with your spouse. If you are not married yet, then you may want to consider getting married before coming to Israel.

Getting married before making Aliyah is certainly not a prerequisite. There are many available singles in Israel, and you already know that one can live nearly as cheaply as two.

However, there are some advantages to marrying somebody from the culture with which you are most familiar.

Whom should an American Oleh marry?

If you do want to marry before coming to Israel, you may want to consider the following issues:

Finding the right marriage partner is difficult enough without adding Aliyah to the agenda. However, the issue does take on added cultural meaning, since Israel is a family-oriented society. You may also want to marry somebody who shares your language preferences.

If you are still dating, then consider your future spouse's determination to make Aliyah. That issue is important. You would not want to marry someone who is "willing" to "try" living in Israel, unless you appreciate unexpected surprises and challenges.

If you are already married, then you should discuss whether your spouse's feelings about meeting the potential hurdles in Israel match yours.

Some people take a strange and incorrect attitude towards Israel and marriage. They feel that they have covered the field in the States, and they now want to let Israel resolve issues that they could not accomplish on their own.

It won't work.

Israel is too busy handling other major miracles right now. In other words, you may be wise to handle your own issues by natural means. Perhaps after things calm down over here, then you can put in a request for your own personal miracle.

Where do you want to go now?
