Let us add one more twist to our analysis of the date of Israeli Independence Day.
The other articles in this series assume that the State of Israel was declared on Friday, 5 Iyar. As it happens, the British Mandate was terminated on Friday night, so Israel became an independent state on 6 Iyar - a Shabbat. Prime-Minister-Elect David Ben-Gurion announced the forthcoming establishment of the State several hours early so that he would not desecrate the Shabbat.
Thus, Independence Day can be celebrated properly only on those rare years in which it falls on Shabbat - without being postponed!
