Graphics Options in Word Processing Programs - Part 1
Many word processing programs have options for performing basic graphics functions, such as emphasizing selected text with shading or borders.
Microsoft Word allows various possibilities of frames or borders around selected words or paragraphs. AmiPro and WordPro have the added feature of allowing the edges to be rounded in order to give an additional effect. Shading can then be added to the rounded lines. Most programs will allow you to make that border line darker or lighter, to adjust the color, or to create borders that are dotted or jagged, or to present other options or attributes.
Of course, you can place borders around specific words, or even around an individual letter. Play around with several options here. You might want to select the area and use the regular border functions, or you might want to simply use the graphic rectangle function. Both options are sometimes persnickety when dealing with small areas, so a little experimenting is in order.
A word of caution: If you're going to work with the graphic rectangle, check whether it will move with your text. You don't want an embarrassing situation in which your edited document shows a very lonesome and irrelevant rectangle floating around, while the letters or words to be emphasized are forgotten.
Those borders that were described related to a box around specific text. A different kind of border can surround the entire page - and they are sometimes the most interesting.
The next article in this series will examine page borders.
