Spare
Leap Frog

Some people "create" spare computers by leapfrogging their computer purchases.

They buy new computers every year or two. The older computer, which is still in good working condition is set aside and used as the spare, or secondary, computer. It already has software that is reasonably current. It is already working properly, and most of the bugs should have been eliminated. Perhaps it should be serviced just to be sure that it will serve you well, as a spare.

In that way you can think of the spare computer as being nearly free.
