When selecting a shareware product to evaluate, think about whether you can really determine whether the product is going to give you the information that you need.

For example, the sound recorder in one version of Windows was limited to 60 seconds. In order to evaluate another product a number of shareware items were reviewed from one of the download sites and a number of them were potential candidates because they could probably have done the job well.

Most of these, however, were trial versions which were good for between 40 seconds and 3 minutes. That's not much to go by. It isn't much to test even if they did have some nice features.

One product, and only one, offered all of the features so that it could be tried out, but it was limited to 15 days of use.

That product cost about twice as much as the others but it was possible to test it out the proper way to see if it would really do the job it was supposed to do.

When it was found to be okay, possibly not as good as some of the others, but it was okay, but on the other hand, it was able to handle the specific problem which needed to be investigated - the length of time that it would record - then it was clear that this product would be the one to be selected.

The problem was the length of time that the built-in product worked. This product served the specific problem that was needed.

It was quite obvious that this is the only one out of the entire pack that would be selected.
