Drop Caps

Some fine publications use special graphic effects in order to improve the look of the final product. Many of these effects have been described elsewhere in this series of articles about desktop publishing.

We will now describe a particular effect that is not used as much as possible in recent publications:

Drop caps. Word allows you to create drop caps in the following way:

Click in the paragraph. It should be a paragraph with at least three lines in order to achieve teh best effect.

Choose Format, Drop Cap, and select a type of drop cap.

Choose a font from the Font drop-down list, and choose how many text lines to drop. The Lines to Drop should be 0 for most wide letters that are dropped, and 1 for letters like 1 or I. After clicking OK you may see a box that asks whether you want to switch to Page Layout View. Answer Yes.
