Glossary
Boycott:
Verb- To cease using, purchasing, or dealing with as
a form
of protest.
Noun- A group of individuals who are boycotting together.
CEO: (aka Chief Executive Officer)
Noun- The person responsible for the whole company's
operations.
CFO: (aka Chief Financial Officer)
Noun- The person responsible for a
company's financial
planning and
record keeping.
COO: (aka Chief Operating Officer)
Noun- The person responsible for the day-to-day
management
of a company.
Living Wage: (aka Subsistence Wage)
Noun- The lowest wage that an employee can receive
while
still being able
to live somewhat healthily (ie they can
puchase basic
food items and clothing).
Maquila: (aka Maquiladora)
Noun- A factory to which companies can send
raw
materials
tax/tariff-free to be made into products. The
products
can then be shipped out and sold on the
company's
home market tax/tariff-free.
Minimum Wage:
Noun- The lowest hourly wage that an
employer can pay an
employee
by law. This does not necessarily mean
that
an individual can make a living with this wage
(see
living wage).
Organic
Adjective- (1) Produced or grown with fertilizers or
pesticides
made
of animal or vegetable material. (No
chemicals).
(2) Without chemical injections or
additives
(such as antibiotics or hormones).
Private Company: (aka Privately Owned)
Noun- A company whose shares are not
traded on a stock
market.
Proprietary:
Adjective- Being privately owned or
confidential.
Public Company: (aka Publicly Held or
Publicly Traded)
Noun- A company whose stock is traded in
a stock market.
Retail:
Noun- The sale of goods in small quantities directly
to
consumers.
Adjective- Selling or related to selling at retail. (see
above)
Solidarity:
Noun- A union of interests, purposes or
responsibilites among
members of a
group.
Subsistence Wage: (aka Living Wage)
Noun- The lowest wage that an employee can
receive while
still being able
to live somewhat healthily (ie they can
puchase basic
food items and clothing).
Sweatshop:
Noun- A shop or factory in which workers receive low
wages,
work long hours
in poor conditions, and/or are abused
emotionally or
physically.
Union:
Noun- A group of workers who have come
together to protect
their
rights and common interests, and to improve their
working
conditions. |
