Prelude: Lost Rocket Summer...page 7 II continued: The Bahamas ''The Russians or the Americans? The rock and the hard place. Space exploration with military undertones and overtones and every tone in between.'' Cathy stared at her young friend, trying to read his mind. ''Dan, you're not thinking of going over to the Russians, are you?'' she said slowly. ''Not at all,'' Dan said quickly. ''I'm just thinking...what is needed is private backing...or backing by governments that don't know what their backing...'' His voice trailed off and a far-away look came into his eyes. ''It could be done. Design the stuff the way the politicians want it but insert bits and pieces that could be used for a better purpose. The politicians would never know it was there and the workers who actually built the things wouldn't tell them...'' ''What are you thinking about, Dan?'' Cathy demanded. Dan grinned at her. ''Ways and means. Ways and means.'' ''Don't be so damn cryptic. I hate that. What 'ways and means'?'' ''A way to get mankind to the stars. The way it should be done.'' Dan was smiling to himself, and Cathy disliked that smile - it reminded her of Steed's, with his assumption that he had told her all she needed to know while he pulled strings behind the scenes. And clearly, like Steed, he was not going to tell her any more. As they walked back toward her hotel, Cathy reviewed their conversation in her mind, running through every nuance of Dan's speech. She believed him when he said he would not go over to the Russians. If scientists had little freedom in 'the free world', it would be even less over there. Dan would accomplish his goals - of that she had no doubt - even if he had to somehow manipulate the entire scientific community to do it. Cathy shook her head ruefully. Just like Steed, she thought.
