Warlock

Catherine Gale and John Steed
THE AVENGERS

Warlock was supposed to be the episode that introduced Catherine Gale, and as originally written when Steed goes to visit Mrs. Gale at the British Museum it is the first time they meet.

However, because of the bizarre way in which the episodes were first aired in England, Warlock is actually seen eleven weeks after the first episode in which she appears, Mr. Teddy Bear. So the episode was edited to leave out the fact that this is Steed and Gale's first meeting, and some scenes are either switched around or reshot.

Now, in their first meeting, there's a pretty obvious cut where Steed first speaks with Mrs. Gale. In the very first few seconds, Gale calls Steed, 'Steed', although later on in the same scene she calls him, ''Mr. Steed.''

In Peter Neville's flat, when Mrs. Gale breaks in, Patrick Macnee is given a great chance to show his acting ability. Cathy Gale has just thrown him in a judo throw, he pops to his feet, she's talking about searching the flat, and he tries to think of something to say and then just bites his tongue. A great little scene.

Witchcraft in the early 1960s was a big thing. Covens were in the media. Heron Carvic wrote a book called Witch Miss Seeton, even Agatha Christie wrote a mystery featuring assassins who ostensibly killed by witchcraft. Television programs were rife with the plot line.

The information that is given to Honor Blackman to give as Catherine Gale are rather thin...eventually perhaps I'll write this episode up properly and give the full details of witchcraft in the modern world.

You can purchase Warlock, along with The Golden Eggs, Intercrime and Immortal Clay in Avengers 65 Set 3. Unfortunately A and E also includes a Venus Smith episode on each CD, which is really short-changing Cathy Gale fans. Nevertheless it's interesting to see how Steed treats the 'ditzy' Venus Smith as opposed to the older, more mature and sophisticated Catherine Gale.
