What is Lacan's Mother to Father theory?

Simply, Lacan's mother to father theory states that immediately after birth, a person is physically and emotionally attached to their "mother", a being who represents a person's origin and safety zone. However, as a person grows older, they have a need for acceptance in society and they start to drift away from their "mother", moving towards their "father." The father represents society, and the community's acceptance of the person.
