Suggested Reading

I don't necessarily recommend everything by all these authors. Nor have I ever agreed with every single thing in most any book. You need to learn to cast aside the bad (something negative in a book), and discard what you don't like (for whatever reason), and keep what you do like, and memorize as much as you can. This also helps in rituals, to keep your focus, instead of constantly having to look back at a book, or your Book of Shadows. I also recommend reading about different religions and paths, and reading some of their spiritual books, too. Try to always see, and suggest to others, the similarities in practice and belief, through the cultures, and that, having unity.

Plus, develop your own intuition, and rites, also -- don't always rely on books; and take the time to walk through/in Nature, and look at the miracles and delicate intricasies in all life, for therein is found more wisdom than in books, however well-meaning and well-written.

deTraci Regula "The Mysteries of Isis"

Jocelyn Almond "An Egyptian Book of Shadows"

Scott Cunningham "Wicca, A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner," and other works

Ann Moura or Aoumiel "Green Witchcraft," and other books

Silver RavenWolf "To Stir A Magick Cauldron," and others (though, I don't agree that the Goddess and God curse anyone; maybe there's a nasty ghost here and there that bothers people [not usually], but that's about it)

Michael Newton "Journey of Souls," and "Destiny of Souls," reincarnation, life-between-lives

Doreen Virtue "The Lightworker's Way," a New Age book (though, I don't agree that the Earth is an illusion, but she has some great thoughts)

Raymond Buckland "Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft"

Marian Green "A Witch Alone"

Starhawk "The Spiral Dance"

Gerina Dunwich "The Wicca Book of Days"

Pick up a Witches' Calendar, also, like Llewellyn's.

And you may wish to buy a Tarot card deck or two (there's many different ones), if that interests you (there are 22 major arcana cards, and 56 minor arcana cards, making 78 cards, in a deck, and four suits: the suits are cups [or hearts, representing emotions; element of water; feeling], wands [or clubs; career; beginnings; element of fire; intuition], swords [or spades; mental forces; element of air; thinking], pentacles [or diamonds; material forces; element of earth; sensation], in those/most Tarot card decks). The old standard Tarot card deck is the "RiderWaite" Tarot.

You might wish to look at "The Egyptian Book of the Dead," also (it's more of a collection of "hymns" to the ancient Egyptian deities).

Suggestions in Music or Listening; Tapes, CDs: Enya CDs, the Pure Moods collection of CDs (at least the first one, which I've heard), a couple albums by the band LIVE (like, "The Distance To Here" album), the meditation tape "Chakra Clearing" by Doreen Virtue, and there's many popular songs that are very suggestive (at least, to me) of spiritual and pagan topics, and so on (just don't fill your soul with negative music -- it has a real bad effect on people, believe or not; music is quite powerful, one way or another)

Anyway, books are great, but you don't need to have tons of magickal books in your house. If there's one thing people new to any religion do -- it's overspend, and maybe go broke, on buying things right away. It's not necessary to buy that much. You can make most of your own tools, and again, you should rely on personal insight, and contemplate about your own questions, too, and write some of your own things down (which helps you to memorize, too), and not only do reading.

And, something that will help you, let's say in your third year, is to look at and do comparisons with other religions. Really, doing comparisons with that, and some of it's philosophy, and are actually good. I didn't say it wasn't. You shouldn't ever be afraid of other religions (except for weird death cults, which are rare, thank Goddess!), or at least the scholarly, open-minded, yet, perhaps, detached, study of them, because people are just people, and you can use discernment with them, and with any teaching. Do not be ignorant; and be ready to answer questions simply and clearly (don't go off into a three hour dissertation with someone who just asked one thing who just met you! unless it's love at first sight, right?); that's the good point.

Note, you're always learning, so probably nobody ever completely (in this life) masters the universe, so to speak. At our core, we're all good and pure (I said, at our core; though, you can ask, and have to ask [it won't be forced on you -- we have free will, you know], "God," to purify the rest of ya), but there are many confused people who need more knowledge... or most people, really. Things are kinda how you look at them (your thoughts). And never believe anyone who says they have something you can't learn without them (they're on a power trip). A teacher could be nice, but you need to learn, at some point, to work on your own, do daily devotions on your own, et cetera. How YOU relate with Deity is your set of mysteries, and how any particular group or person relates to deity is their set of mysteries, and of the Great Mysteries: All is One. So, there's really nothing you can't learn on your own, or with Divine help, too, eventually. (Except for how to work with a group. :-) ) (And, except for, too, a particular initiation into a particular group with their own ways and lines of power.) Plus, how you, personally, work with a group, and how you feel Spirit energy, too, are more of your own sets of mysteries, and so on. You get it. Your soul knows... for most people, deep down, and for those fine Seekers, they remember it up to the surface (over time). (Though, people may become nasty for a while, in a religion, but turn it around, later, so the key word is: patience [and probably faith]... with all beings. I would almost never advise to burn any bridges, but you will need to stay clear of some, for a while.) Have courage. Sometimes you need to loose your self, to find your self, too. Remember, with other people, and with your own self-esteem -- it's Build Up -- Not Tear Down [People]. (But don't base all your feelings on what others think of you. Sheesh. Some people do that. It's bad. So, Ok, then. Bless You!)
