REVIEW - "SPIRITED AWAY"

October 3, 2002- There is a force of visual rapture in “Spirited Away.” The story of a girl unsettled by moving to a new home, who stops near the sea with her parents and is swept off into an island fantasy world, is all flux and froth and freedom. Kids can gape, but you can also feel some adults in the audience going into giddy sync, as if tapping into their childhoods — or nostalgic feelings for childhood dreams that now get a heightened playback.

REVIEW - "THE FOUR FEATHERS"

September 19, 2002- “The Four Feathers” is a movie of unexpected weight — the toughest, brawniest version yet of A.E.W. Mason’s old British Empire saga about a “coward” who redeems himself through fantastic bravery. There were six movie versions filmed in the past, the most famous in 1939, starring Ralph Richardson. Now Shekhar Kapur has filmed it again, with most of the tin-toy soldier piety wiped away.

REVIEW - "MAD LOVE"

September 13, 2002-  Every historical film, it seems, has certain requirements: galloping horses, characters swathed in yards of tapestry fabric, demure yet treacherous ladies-in-waiting. “Mad Love” has all that and more — the passionate despair of a queen whose love for her husband goes unrequited.
