"I've found a way to do ruffles and gathers that has made my life so much simpler - with a 6 yo DD that loves dresses that she can spin in I do a lot of those.
All I do is put buttonhole twist in my bobbin, reduce the upper tension slightly and sew two row of gathering stitches with the bobbin thread to the back.
Gathering is a breeze because the bobbin thread is stronger than the upper thread and doesn't break. I just finished a dress with 4 tiers on the skirt and ruffles at the shoulder and it was a snap! "
