Bloomers

Bloomers are essentially baggy shorts with elastic to bring the bagginess under control, an abbreviated version of the romper.. They provide a very shapely outline, becoming, attractive and yet are quite modest...

	"Bloomers" are common in Japan as gym uniforms, and occasionally seen in a more stylized form on girls in public. The summers can be quite hot and muggy. Loose fitting clothes are cooler.		Simplicity cranked out these "thirty-minute" shorts (5518). I was actually able to layout, cut and stitch them in under a half hour.
	This Simplicity pattern carried the blousing effect past the elastic for an interesting effect (5948).		Included in the same package, Simplicity 5948 had this variant with tied legs... Pockets are a real convenience in the summer.
	Simplicity offered adult versions of what many may have considered a childish garment (5932).		This Simplicity pattern (5516) is similar to the one in the left column, but featured pockets as well. I made this up in bright pink linen-look fabric for camp in May 98.
	This two-piece Simplicity (8555) bloomer set was popular in the 80s . JC Penney sold a similar outfit in their stores, with the tops and bottoms sold separately.		McCalls offered this version (1522) much earlier.
	Simplicity offered this children's size version (4362) of the bandeau top set.		Here is Simplicity's adult version (1634) of the the bandeau top romper set. Note the side ties on the bloomers.
	Simplicity 1620 is the girl's version of this bloomer set - a reprint of their earlier 2129 pattern. They just keep coming back.		Simplicity 1621 is the adult version.
	As evidence of the popularity of this design, Simplicity released it yet again as 2889.		This undated Simplicity pattern (3175) provides an example of the WWII style of side-buttoned bloomers.
