A. The first phase (A1) of 5,412 ring spindles was commissioned in October 1984. Thereafter, in 1986 we commissioned our second phase (A2)adding another 1,968 ring spindles and 168 open end rotor. Phase A2 was founded through a DBZ loan of K7.5 million (equivalent to US$2 million at that time). The third phase (A3) was co-financed by DBZ to the tune of US$2 million and the Bank of Credit and Commerce, London, for the amount of US$3.5 million, with the balance coming from our own resources. Upon completion of phase A3 with had total installed capacity of 10,564 ring spindles and 1,008 open end rotors.
Q. What has been SSML's production capacity?
A. Before I disscus production, it is necessary to mention that our expansion programme continued even after the completion of the initial three phases which we have designated A1, A2 and A3.
Under the phase B1 expansion, financed though the Eastern and Southern African Trade Development Bank (PTA Bank), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and from our own resources, an additional 16,352 ring spindles and a dyehouse was added to the plant. This project, which again had spinning machinery with state of the art technology, was completed in January 1994. It was pertinent to mention here that with installation of the dyehouse we put in place an effluent treatment plant to ensure neutral and eco-friendly discharge into the city drains.
A. We are currently producing 7,000 metric tonnes per annum of carded and combed ring spun as well as carded open and cotton yarns. With the addition of phases B2 and B3 our total capacity will reach 14,000 metric tonnes of yarn per annum. The product range will include combed or carded ring spun cotton yarns, open end cotton yarns and combed polyester cotton yarns. Furthermore, we shall have the capacity to deliver 25% of these yarns as bleached or dyed, as well as 400 metric tonnes per annum of bleached cotton wool
Q. How much of this production has gone into the domestic market?
