                    for FS98 and creating
of landing lights : Jens Borgstroem
                                         Duckling Air 1/1-98

Thank you for downloading this aircraft.
Features include night lighting effects on passenger windows and landing lights
when gear down.

'Real landing lights' illuminating the runway are activated either by the re-
levant switch on panel or by keys <ctrl>+'L', please notice that they do NOT
come on automatically when gear is down.
The plane is configured as a 'Jet' for your info. This means that one particular
feature, namely the 'condition lever'- altering the propellers angle/prop ad-
vance has had to be left out. On the other hand you have 'reverse thrust' by
pressing the key 'F2'.

This model is an enhanched version of the sample developed FS5.1 dated 4/1-97
by M.D.Baclawaki and Tony Bolton.

I teamed up with a real SAAB340B pilot by the name of Eric W.Ernst and with
his help and a lot of testflying using many, many hours on both his and my
part, we finally managed to get the plane to fly as close to the real 'bird'
(given FS98 limitations) and the added landing lights to look as real as
possible.

Eric is also the creator of true to life SAAB340 panels for FS98.
First came the FO's panel ( the assisting 2nd in command pilot, in the seat
to the right in the cockpit ) and now, he has just finished the next edition,
seen from the Captain's point of view ( the left seat ).
Both panels are as correct as possible to the real ones - for further info -
please read the txt-files related to the panels themselves.

When I saw the first panel (the FO panel) I thought it necessary for Eric to
have the best possible plane to accompany it. Funny enough the best sample
I could find was one painted in the livery of the real airliner company
'American Eagle' - because it later turned out, that Eric in fact is a pilot
flying for that company, in real life.

I mostly do in altering planes, painting and creating flight dynamics ( the
way aircrafts behave in flight sim ).

In this case I, as allways, naturally looked over the plane's construction and
artwork, and came to the rare conclusion - there was nothing that needed any
'tweak' here or there ! A remarkable sample of craftsmanship within the boun-
daries and limitations of Microsoft's Flight Simulator.

The plane, however, was constructed for FS5.1 version, and just put through
the FS98 converter resulted in a very bad model - I dare say - as always.
Some simmers won't notice this or that, and some planes fly 'nice' after a
simple, standard conversion - BUT is it correct, the way the planes behave
in FS98, is it realistic ?? Almost never !!
And that's the reason for all the hours of making changes and testflying.

In fact, as you might have gathered by now Eric's FO panel inspired me to
create this plane and the sounds, and the plane the other way inspired Eric
to create the Captain's panel - so - look upon it as a complete package,
all together.

Hope you like the fruits of all our efforts and work.

INSTALLATION:
*************
The plane-package consists of plane and sounds, which accounts for the size
of the file, even when zipped.

I created the sounds especially for this plane.

For panel, I urge you to get one or both of Eric Ernst's S340 panels.

Use an 'unzipper' that can handle long filenames ( e.g. WINzip ) and unzip
to your FS98 folder named 'AIRCRAFTS'- remember to check the option to re-
create sub directories !

You should now, if done correctly, have a directory in your 'AIRCRAFT' folder
named SAB340AM, containing all the soundfiles, config. files, plane files asf.
in the relevant sub directories/ sub folders.

The 'panel.cfg' in the 'panel' subdirectory of S340AM points to the default
directory for panels for converted aircrafts. Don't get puzzled - read the
instructions Eric has written in HIS txt files as for how to install
and assign new panels.
Also, you can go to Microsofts Homepage - find the 'Games' and Fsim page, and
read how to alter the default way of configuring the FS98.

THE PLANE:
**********

Known under the designation of SAAB-FAIRCHILD SF340, this machine was launched
in January 1980.
Saab has resumed the total control of the programm in 1985, Fairchild preserving
solely a position of subcontractor in 1987, date to which the designation SF
has disappeared.
SF 340 has undertaken its first flight on 26th July 1983 and the first machine
was produced in March 1984.
The certification that was established in cooperation with ten European nations
and United States was obtained in May 1984.
Just by Christmas time 1997, Saab announced that they would stop production of
all aircrafts except the JAS fighter for the Swedish Defense.
Still unknown whether any other Airplane producer will take over, but as far as
the 'intelligence network' knows, it is not likely to happen.

A note re. the presenting picture:
**********************************
Duckling Air is my virtual airline company, and also the name of my virtual
aircraft factory, the latter created this SAAB S340B for FS98.

THANKS ( in no particular order ):
**********************************
To Marty D. Baclawski and Tony Bolton for the use of their marvellous aircraft.
To Ian D. Donohoe for all his work with the aircraft dynamic editor for FS98,
best known as ADE98. Without it this plane wouldn't exist.
To Siggy Schwarz for his Lladd97 programm.
To Don Irvine for the use of his facilities at Springfield/Branson Airport.
Gave me the possibility to set up shop in his hangars ( see the picture ),
and take over some of the administartion buildings for Duckling Air.
To Eric W.Ernst, yet another friend in the flight sim community, thanks for his
ever lasting patience and pioneering spirit.
To all my test pilots within the virtual world.
