The sacrificial horse


The first section of the first chapter of Brihadaranya upanishad starts with the discription of the horse of sacrifice known as "ashva" for "ashvamedh yajna". The body parts of the horse described here are the parts of the universe we percieve.

The parts mentioned here as follows:

dawn as the head of the horse,
sun as the eyes
the air as the vital force,
spreaded or openfire as its hungar
a year as its soul
sky as its back or upper side
inner space as stomach
the earth as the feet rest
quarters as the region of the ribs
intermediate quarters as ribs
seasons as parts of body
months and fortnights as the joints
day and nights are the establishments
gallexies are the bones
clouds constitutes the flesh
sand particles as undigested food (in his belly)
oceans are excretary organs
the mountains as liver lobes and lungs
medicinal splants and trees in the forests are its hair
its eyes i.e. the sun when rises the upper part of his body gets illuminated while sun when going downwards, the lower parts of the body gets illuminated.
when it yawns, the lightening apppears
when vibrates(shakes the body) there is thunder in the sky,
When urinates there is rain
origin of sound itself is its speech.
